Ludwig-Paiste 15” HH or crash cymbal

Loading...

Hi,

I have a old Ludwig-Paiste cymbal that sounds good as a thin crash. But I wanted to know if it was a crash or if I could tell if it was the top of a HH? If there is a suggestion for a heavy bottom 15” to try it as a HH. I would guess at a 602 material.

Thanks

I wouldn't suggest a 602 bottom, rather, just go on eBay (or wherever) and get another Ludwig Paiste at a cheap price to complete a hi-hat setup (3 Star, Standard, Swiss, or German). Those thin Ludwig Paistes make for really nice small combo hi-hats.

As for whether it's a crash or hi-hat, who knows? The old catalogs write that they offer cymbals from 10" to 22", and I'm quite convinced that they would have just grabbed two 15"s for hi-hat pairings. Also, be careful if you use it as a crash - we're talking NS12 alloy here and therefore quite malleable (bends very easily).

Thanks,

I took it to a drum store in Cleveland and they said it is a crash and that the size might be metric (40 cm?). Since it is Swiss from that time era. It does seem to be thin and makes it a fast crash. It is good that it is still in good shape because it does seem fragile, another reason not to make it a hat. Will probably set it aside for a newer crash.

The Ludwig cymbals (or 3-Stars as some call them) came in Thin, Medium and Heavy weights. I doubt there were specific hi hat cymbals instead the "Hats" were paired up by putting two individual cymbals together and then an additional Hi Hat stamp was sometimes added below the weight stamp. It seems a lot of the time a thin (for the top) and medium (for the bottom) were paired or two cymbals of the same weight were paired up. Depended on what the drummer wanted.
