Ludwig Mounted Tom issue

Hey all.

I have a 60's Super Classic kit. All the drums sound lovely and smooth, that is until I put the 13" on the Console Rail mount, or even on a snare stand. Other than putting a fugly rims mount on it, does anyone have a cheeky remidy for isolating the tom on the mount? After all when the kit looks the best when it's set up traditionally, and keeps hardware to a minimum.

Been there in spades. RIMS work best; but Nashville drummer Tommy Wells (who pioneered floor tom suspension feet) also used silicon rubber surgical tubing pieces slipped over the arms of the snare stand, to mount rack toms.

I speak from experience (in studio situations) and I think no two snare stands are equal, when it comes to mounting a tom. Some stands may even choke the drum. Try the tubing on a few stands. Cheap too. $00.02

I have a 60's Super Classic 22,13,16 setup in my studio right now.

It's setup with the traditional hardware with the tom on the rail.

I think it sounds killer.

No choking at all.

Rings like a bell.

Love it. flower

Your mileage may vary.

If using a snare stand, you can't clamp it down hard.Try and isolate the drum from the stand itself with felts, rubber tubing etc. There are ways of using an L-rod on a stand clamp to mount the drum on a cymbal stand, which is what I do.Not particularly authentic looking, but are you looking at the drums or playing them?By mounting the drum on the cymbal stand, you have advantages in positioning a snare stand won't give you.

This is the direction I'm going with my 3-ply Ludwigs. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about them so far.

I've been through the Snare stand thing. It works great on my Gretsch RB's, and the DW's but not this kit. The 70's Luddy sings on the mount.

I've also tried the RIMS thing but I use thin DW 6000 flat base hardware and I don't want to use anything heavier.

Oddly when I lift up the Tom by hand by holding the Tom mount she sings. You would think if the tom had shell stress issues by its own weight then that would show. Only then when I mount it on the rail the resonance is stopped dead! I have noticed I can feel the shock vibration through the BD pedal when I strike the tom. that cannot be good. Basically the vibration is running straight out - through - and down the mount. I was wondering if anyone had a trick for isolating the bracket at point of contact with the shell if for that matter it would work.

Ok also at Blackd, how does this Atlas mount system apply to Vintage ludwig? Do I just swap out the lugs on my kit and fit it? Is that what you have done to a vintage luddy?

Thanks for your help all.

The Atlas mount, as I understand it, is a one-for-one swap for a long Classic lug.

Ok interesting. It it were my only kit and I had to make it road worthy then yeah, but I just can't get my head around putting on my old beautiful kit.

Hmmmm, thinking out loud, would putting soft leather grommets under the rail mount help. That would isolate the BD from the mount at contact. It's not the tom mount thats the issue. maybe I should isolate both anyway.

Has anyone tried that??

not tried isolating the rail, I have noticed that the new DW rail is isolated.

With the atlas mount, there is no drilling and you can save the lug it replaces so you could always put the original lug back on. The atlas will make your tom sing, mine is on a 67 13x9.
