Ludwig Mod Orange Set

Loading...

I need some help restoring, dating and obtaining a value on a late 60's? 3 peice Ludwig drum set. My brother passed away a few years ago and I ended up with his old drum set. It was purchased new in the late 60's or early 70's in the Mod Orange color. A few years later he wanted to add acouple more toms but the M.O. color was not available so he bought a couple of clear Vistalite drums. A few years later he wanted all the drums to match so he took all the hardware off and spray painted them all white. I know, not a good move, but when your 15 years old you don't think of the future. Anyways, I'm looking for a way to strip the old spray paint off the drums without harming the original finish. 3 drums are M.O. and 2 are clear Vistalite.

The original drums have the keystone badge with s/n 460xxx. Other sites say that dates to 1967 but I don't think the drums were purchased that early, but that was along time ago. If I restore them any idea on prices? I'll try to attach some photos, thanks for any help. SK

If you can strep away that ugly white color, ant not destroy original wrap ( Orange Mod), that will be great. As you probably already know, Orange Mod, Citrus Mod and Psychedelic Red are few of the most rare and collectable Ludwig finishis today.

If the price for "ORDINARY" Ludwig from late 60:s is about 1000$ , than its not difficult to get 2000£for one of those three sets.

I recently sew a 67 PsycheRed in nice condition for sale, for 3500$ and one week later, they was sold!!!

I am not sure how you will do, try to use some paint remover? It does not destroy plastic wrap?

Well that kit is something special to work carefully on bringing back for a number of obvious reasons..

Hmmm... getting paint off the finish without doing damage to the finish... wow, I have no experience with that but it's got to be challenge.

Maybe. this.. http://www.chameleonproductsonline.com/

I also read that several treatments with Pine Sol cleaner can begin to break down paint on plastic models without damaging them.

I'll be real curious to see what other stuff people come up with..

Not a Guru... just interested..

Wow, that will probably take a lot of time and patience.

I do'nt have a clue for any products or the ways and means, when you tackle it, post the results.

Woww... That was great....

But you have to explain me little better, plase( not so good in english)...

What did you actually do? Use ONLY a ordinary wet sanding papper..? As car painter use?

But what is that pink stuff I can see om those 2 pictures? It´s looking like a big-big chewing gum?

That´s not some kind of chemical paint-remover???

Apostrophe, That does look excellent! I just hope I can get mine to look that good. What grit sandpaper did you use? When its all stripped did you use anything on the finish to restore it and make it shine(fine steel wool)?

Thanks,

SK

Thanks for the kind words on my work!

I've used a quite smooth paper on the spray paint and a bit lower grit on the pink dots that consisted of thicker paint, in some places under the black color, you see it in pic. 1 & 2.

Just do some easy rubbing to dissolve the paint and then wipe it of with a towel or something. Do not take too much water cause it can easily drain around the drum, mask the holes and edges before you feel in control of how it works.

Any small scratches, I polished off with Autosol Chrome Polish, which also provides a glossy finish.

Apostrophe, I appreciate the advice! The spray paint has to be at least 35 years old, I'm sure it would flake off easy, I just don't want to harm the finish. I'll have to make sure not to press too hard when I sand it. Thanks!

If there are any other ideas out there let me know.

I haven't done this on a wrapped drum, but I used it on my home wood trim and it was very gentle and non-toxic. I would be very nervous about sanding off the paint out of fear of removing some of the wrap's surface, too. The name of the product is Ready-Strip http://www.readystripsales.com/ paint remover. You basically apply it like paint and then wait for it to turn color, It reacts with paint, but I don't think it reacts with plastic. (It comes in a plastic bucket after all). I would be curious to try it if I had a job like that. I would probably try it on a small section, first, to see if there was an adverse reaction. Again, this is just an idea. Normally, I wouldn't recommend paint strippers, but this stuff is a bit different. It might work. It might not. -just an idea.
