Ludwig marching bass drum claw question!!

Loading...

Hey there

I recently acquired an old Ludwig 15x12 marching drum converted to a bass drum. At the moment it is has single tension rods. It looks like the single tension side of the rods have a thread that can be unscrewed. Will I be able to attach a bass drum claw to that end of tune in rod? I will attach some photos which may make my question clearer.

If this is possible, will any generic bass de claw fit the on? Or are old 50s (I think) Ludwig tension rods a non standard size. I'm not too fussed about keeping it original as it has already been modified and received a dodgy paint job at some stage in its life.

Thanks for any advice!!

Whatever type of claws you attach will have to be threaded (Ludwig used the standard drum rod thread) because that is where both heads derive their tension, from the force of those rods threading into the claws on that side.

Great, thanks for the response! So any standard threaded bass drum close should fit?

Yes, any should work but I don't think anyone makes those anymore so you'd need different vintage single tension claws and I'm not sure what that will gain you unless it's a cosmetic issue.

Cool, sounds like potentially more effort than it is worth i think. The main objective would have been to get more control over tuning

To do that you'd need to add lugs and replace all the tension rods. Otherwise it would just be a cosmetic change to swap out the lower claws.

I have some claws that came off a marcher with wood hoops, I believe. I boughtthem thinking they would fit a regular bass hoop without realizing there is a difference.

I can dig them out this weekend and give you a deal if you are interested.

Thanks.
