Only confirms what I already suspected; the older drum sounds better than the newer version. Materials and workmanship matter... always.

I have heard that the process for making aluminum products has changed in the last 30 years and that to make it stronger the mix is a bit harder which would make the drum have overtones compared to the older mix which was a bit softer the softer also shed the chrome easier , don;t know if it is true but it makes sence
