Ludwig kit with both large and small lugs?

I recently picked up an old Ludwig Blue Oyster kit. I plan on restoring it. The Serial #'s are: Bass 22" - 1127305, Tom 12" - 1090536, Tom 13" - 1128813, Floor 16" -1128149. The question I have is the 12" tom (1090536) has small Ludwig lugs and the rest of the kit has the large. I thought the kit was born together from the factory by the close serial #'s but since one of the toms have small lugs, I don't know. Would Ludwig mismatch the kit like this? Any ideas?

Thanks

That's actually correct...most 60's and 70's Ludwig 8x12 toms have small lugs.

Yep, that's correct. Actually, many kits incorporate THREE different styles of lugs, e.g., small, large Classics and then if you have a Supra, you have Imperial lugs. Or, if you have a Downbeat with a Downbeat snare, you have yet another combination of three different lug styles. Come to think of it, I think the only instance where all the lug styles are "matched" is on the Club Dates with a Jazz Festival or Pioneer snare drum or possibly an Acrolite -where all the lugs are "Bowties". And, also the Standard line utilized their own, unique set of matching lugs -I believe they were all the same style/size.

:)

It's a good topic. I never really thought about it before now. And now I'm wondering what the name of the lug style was for the thin snare drums like the Downbeat. "Piccolo" lugs has been how I have seen them referred to, but I wonder if they had an official name.

Are they anything like the Ludwig lugs on this drum? OH!! is that a KENT?? Why yes, it's a one of a kind 5x13 Kent Beatdown in Nickle on WMP!!

It's interesting because WFL used small lugs on all the toms when they started the classic lug in 1946-7. Then they switched to large lugs for all the toms by the 1950's and then by 1960 used small lugs for 12's and large for the rest. By the late 70's, large lugs were used all around and now the customer has the option of picking the lugs size for toms. A lot of Ludwig kits now come with mini lugs all around.

Interesting!

I think Ludwig must have had more variations of lug designs/combinations than any other of the "Big Four" (vintage) manufacturers -especially when you also consider the close alliance Ludwig had with Leedy, too.

Just out of curiosity, did any other manufacturers vary their lug designs to the extent that Ludwig did? I know Rogers had the B& B lugs and then also the "Beavertails".

But what about Slingerland and Gretsch?

With (vintage) Ludwig, I can think of:

Imperials

Bowties

Large Classics

Small Classics

"Piccolo" (?)

Standards

What am I forgetting?

Actually, Ludwig had no alliance with Leedy. Wm. Ludwig sold his company in 1930 or so to Conn who had already purchased Leedy. Leedy and Ludwig & Ludwig drums were made side by side in the same factory, with mostly the same parts. In 1950 Conn merged the two brands into one; Leedy and Ludwig, and kept it that way 'til 1955 when they got out of the drum biz and sold out to WFL and Slingerland.

During the '30s thru 1950s, WFL was a competitor of Ludwig & Ludwig, Leedy and Leedy & Ludwig...
