I just bought a 64 set of Ludwig with Black Oyster Pearl wraps. Does anyone know if the interior is supposed to be painted or natural finish. I've seen where, I think, they should be white? It appears that a cream coat has been added. I would like to use the natural wood tone if possible. Would it be harmful to try and go to natural finish and if so what type of clear coat to use? These drums are in really good shape and I plan on playing them at home and in church so I don't want to comprimise the sound of this kit. Thanks in advance for guidance!

64's almost always have white resacote interiors. they could have faded to a cream. if they are original, i certainly would not strip them. just my opinion.

This answer is spot-on.
The only thing I can add is that one of the reasons they went to white interiors was because the paint covered some of their "inconsistancies" in their interior plies. They went back to the clear in 1969, but changed to the grey granitone in 1971 for the same reason they went with the white -- they were more consistant with their interiors this way.
I've seen both white and an "aged" white (kinda like a "cream") on drums of this era.
