Ludwig Hollywood Inquiry

Loading...

When I was 16 I bought a set of silver sparkle Ludwigs that I have always thought were Hollywoods, 22" bass, 12 and 13" mounted and 16" floor toms, with a supraphonic shrome snare, dated Feb 1969. But as I view Hollywoods on Ebay they all seem to be painted inside and mine are not. Can someone help me with this? I'm pretty sure I ordered Hollywoods and it was a local music store. I seem to remember the list price being $588 or $688 and that's what I paid!

And are they maple or birch? Thanks

In mid-1968 Ludwig changed back (from the white) to a natural (clear lacquer) finish with the exception of their Standard Series which switched directly to their "Granitone" finish so your 1969 Kit sounds as if it had the proper interior finish.

Your shells were either Maple/Poplar/Maple or Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany or a combination of the two since Ludwig used Maple & Mahogany with the Poplar as they saw fit back then..........

Can I also add that the Hollywood term refers to the sizes and configuration of the drum set. The 22" bass, 12" & 13" mounted toms, 16" floor tom plus the snare is indeed the Hollywood set.

Sounds like a great original owner set, wanna show us some pictures?

Cheers.

Maybe, maybe not, but this is a straight up case of semantics.

The Big Beat came on the scene in 1968, which was nothing more than a Hollywood (12,13,16,22) with the newer heavy duty "Big Beat" hardware package so, technically speaking, it all depended on what stands, if any, that came with it. If it came as a shell pack then the buyer could have called it either a Big Beat or Hollywood and been correct.

I have a 1971 Hollywood myself, but only because it came with the original stands so I know it rolled out of the Dealer showroom with the older style, lightweight hardware package. I guess when I use it with my Big Beat Stands it converts to a Big Beat. See what I meant about semantics?

Here's the Hollywood info. from 1970

Below is the BIG BEAT info. from the 1968 "Write Your Own Ticket" brochure sent out to Dealers introducing this "new" Outfit.........

In addition to introducing the Big Beat to the Dealers the "Write Your Own Ticket" info. also introduced the Special Deluxe Classic Outfit as well as the new Double Tom Post & Ratchet style Rail Consolette Tom Holder, which replaced the old "Clock Face." In addition to these new items this Dealer Package also included the introductory Flyer for the new Psych Red & Mod Orange Finishes.............

The Hollywood did indeed start with two 12" toms. I think it switched sometime in 1965.

Yes it did O, here it is in Catalog No.64, which came out in the Fall of 1963.

Back then the Hollywood not only had the same size Mounted Toms, it also came stock with the Jazz Festival Snare...........

Thanks, fellas! God, I love looking at those old scans! I wish I had taken some pictures of the old music stores back when I was a kid. Some of us "old guys" know what I'm talking about. Stores with inset doorways, linoleum tile floors...glass counter top display cases with things like kazoos, harmonicas, slide whistles, metronomes, drum keys. "Ruff-Kote" spray-on drumhead coating...Kustom amps with red and blue sparkle quilted cabinets! Fender Mustangs, Gretsch, Rogers, Ludwig, Slingerland kits -all in the same shop! Drum catalogs laying around...old ads...that weird Ghost pedal that no one ever bought because it was too weird-looking...and now everyone wants them! ;)...The old days had a style and I can see it echoed in those old scans. Beautiful!

Well, if that's the case O, and since this is a thread about the Hollywood, let's take it back to the beginning with it's introduction in Catalog No.60.

Note 14 x 14 Floor Tom was an option in place of the stock 16 x 16.........

An appreciative 'thank you' to all who have responded to my post(s) about the Hollywood. It came with the light stands which I still have. since I have not used them in several years, and due to space issues, I flipped the bass on its side, back lit the painted head (from the Swinging Orangutangs hand painted by wildlife artist Julie Zickefoos) covered it with smoked glass and use it as a coffee table. I use another set (Eames) to practice and the DWs to gig. They could use some tender restoration some day but the toms are still the best sounding toms I've played.
