Ludwig Heads - Your Opinion of Them

Hey all,

I recently put Ludwig silver dot heavy`s on the batter sides and medium clears on the reso sides of my Jason Bonham Vistalite set...I wanted to save the original unused heads that came with the set, so, I switched them out...This is the first time I`ve ever used Ludwig brand heads and I am quite impressed with the sound and feel of them...I cannot comment on durability yet because I just put them on...

What is your opinion or experience with Ludwig heads? How would you compare them with Remo, Evans, Aquarian, etc.?

Cheers

I like their snare reso heads. I think they may be thinner than the Remo Hazy Ambassador.

I liked the ones I used, but the biggest issue ( from what I gather ) is that they don't have the same quality control. So one head might be awesome, and the next will be crap. I've never experienced this, but I've also never invested in a set of heads to say one way or the other. But what I did use sounded good and seemed to be as durable as the other brands.

I love their coated mediums and heavys. Never had any quality issues (though I have with Remo). They feel great for some reason, are quicker to tune up, and they sound wonderful on a wide variety of drums. The coating lasts longer than any other brand I've used.

i'm mainly a remo guy but i like the ludwig heads. i've used only certain heads like the snare reso, black kick resos and older heads not avail anymore like the striders.

i used to sell ludwig heads and re head ludwig loaner kits at my old job and i never had issues with them. they're the only "stock" head i would use.

Very much like Ludwig snare side heads. Just ordered a couple of spares. I believe the Ludwig and Remo Ambassador hazy snare side heads are both 300 weight film but the Ludwig clear film responds quite differently. I also have tried the Diplomat snare side head and it's much lighter than either the Ludwig or the Ambassador Hazy and I didn't like the sound or snare response with it at all. The only time I've preferred the Ambassador Hazy was for a Ludwig Black Beauty which was too loud and too sensitive with the Ludwig stock snare head. The Ambassador snare side dried up some of the ring and made the snare sound perfect. Couple of years ago I bought a brand new NOS limited Edition Psychedelic Red Ludwig 5 piece kit with all Ludwig coated mediums and I never had a single inclination to change any of those heads. The drums sounded perfect, just superb with those heads.

I don't know why but they give great response especially on Ludwig drums...Probably because of the very low collar. Very good sounding heads with quality coating.
