A very poorly painted tenor drum, it seems. Definitely a project.

We had 12" by 17" marching tenor drums when I was in high school (I am showing my age here). Most marching bands played them with soft headed tenor drum mallets with little leather thongs on the end for twirling. I think you can get 17 inch batter heads and maybe special order a snare side head if you want to convert it to a field snare drum. You might have to use gut or synthetic gut snare strands. I have seen folks who make them into floor toms and also "snomes" with both the added snare mechanism and floor tom legs. I have not tried that, but have seen them in a Nashville drum shop (Nelson's shop). Maybe it just needs more layers of paint...

I converted an old Leedy 12x16 tenor drum to be a great floor tom for my Leedy orphans bop set. Those drums are perfect for that use.

Nice project! 12x17s are some of my faves. Makes a nice floor tom or small bass drum. Neat find. I've got a few but all of mine are center lug.

12x17 tenor. I've got one too. I've considered making it into a floor tom and coupling it with a 12x15 converted tenor and a 12x13 "power" tom, also converted to floor toms for an odd sized floor tom trio. Another one of those projects currently on the back burner.

At least a couple folks have turned these into bass drums with good results. In at least one instance they had custom wood hoops made up. I've considered that as well but I also have a Slingerland Radio King era 12x18 tenor drum (complete with original wood hoops) so that will become the bass drum and centerpiece of another long delayed project rather than the 17.
