Ludwig Custom Shop?

Loading...

Hello VDF,

I'm thinking about buying a Ringo kit near me that the owner states is from the custom shop at Ludwig. Kit 1 of 1. it is 22/13/16 with a jazzfest all in BOP. Interesting it has the old keystone tags and consolette with fold out spurs. Legacy 3 ply with rerings. I wasn't aware they did this or even had a custom shop like Fender or something. Anything I should know about this kit....it is 2 months old.

cheers

Ludwig doesn't have a custom shop per se, but they do offer a bunch of options on their Classic Maple and Legacy kits: different badges, lugs, mounts & spurs. I'm not sure where they got that rail, and the gullwing spurs aren't a current Ludwig item (although they're easily duplicated with the P-1216-D tom mount and some new Danmar spurs.)

It's possible that the original dealer ordered a virgin kick with no spurs, and installed the rail and gullwing spurs himself.

Isn't the bass badge reversed?

My guess ... Ludwig did not put on those badges or that two hole hot dog mount. Heck, by the time Ludwig was into Keystone badges, they were four-holing the hot dog mount and still using the clipper. That two hole mount looks like a very off decision.

You might also check to verify those are not the repro badges. Can't tell without a close up shot.

Maybe your thinking of C&C Custom drums who made Ringo's Ludwig Star kit.

I would bet that the set was altered at Steve Maxwells place. If not some other drum shop did it because Ludwig has no custom shop. The rail is the new Maxwell version and as Bermuda said the brackets for the bass drum legs are just regular tom mounts.

Ludwig puts the badge at the back of the bass drum(close to the player) and has done it this way since they introduced the modular hardware around 1984. The big modular mount had to be mounted towards the front of the bass drum to be able to make the toms not come too far forward. Because of this Ludwig had to retool the machines to put the badges closer to the player. They just never switched back. It's the same for the toms too. The B/O badge that replaced the keystone badge in mid 1969 had to have the grommet drilled higher to accomidate the bigger badge. They never changed the drill posistion(and will not even on request) to make the smaller new keystone badge look centered. This is why that set has the badge up high.

Someone obviously had the bass drum ordered virgin and had someone else install the bass drum legs and the rail mount. Ludwig also will not center a bass drum cymbal arm so if you want it like the old ones you have to have someone do it or do it yourself if you are comfortable enough. I am not and when I ordered this brands new CM Champagne set, I ordered the cymbal mount seperate and had my store install it where I wanted it. That looks like a nice set with some bonus add ons. I'm not crazy about the look of a two bolt rail as classic Ludwigs always had a 4 bolt.

Here is my new set made to look like a modern version of a 1970 set. They are CM shells and I think it cme out pretty good. It sounds awesome and I gig it all the time now.

Kurt,

I'm not speaking of the positioning of the bass badge. I'm saying it is reversed ... as in "spun" around. The player should be able to read it, not the audience.

And truly, who wants the audience so close that they can read the badge?!

to me the bass drum looks like it doesn't have the lug gaskets while the others look like they do.

also, the kick hoops don't look like the current hoops with a wider inlay. they look like the classic width.

hard to tell without better pics. but i think its possible that its not a ludwig kick.

does/would ludwig ship a bass drum undrilled for spurs? (especially a legacy)

i never had a customer ask for that when i worked at a music store.

From lucky

Nice kit, what are they asking?

The asking no budge price of 3g's! Given some of the responses I'm not even gonna go look at it. Seems like too much risk for something that can't be really authenticated. Anyways the kits on kijiji in Toronto.

Thx
