Ludwig Cortex Rewrap

Loading...

I've been told that you cannot rewrap a Ludwig Cortex finished drum. I just bought a blue/olive badge 6.5X14 10 lug Ludwig Classic red Cortex snare and would like to rewrap it in a sparkle or pearl finish. They say if you try to remove the Cortex that too much of the wood comes with it . Is this true?

You can wrap any drum. But, you better know what you're doing if you are removing an old finish. Any finish can be removed if done properly. I'm not going to instruct nor am I going to suggest you do it. You are aware of your strengths and your limitations. You must ultimately decide if you can handle the job adequately. I personally would not tackle that job. But, that's me. I don't think I have the skills necessary to pull that one off. Others on this forum have WAY more experience than me. They might chime in and give a more in-depth analysis of the potential job ahead.

I took some black cortex off a 6-ply 12x8. It is trying and takes some time. I used a heat gun and a scrapper, evenly, slowly and carefully. Kinda did it in sections with an exacto knife to get it started. Good luck, do'nt rush it.
