Ludwig Club Date-- NEED HELP!!

Loading...

Just last year I came to possess a beautiful 1963 Ludwig Club Date in a blue sparkle finish. It is most certainly a players kit, and not in mint condition. I fixed it up and put new heads on it and it sounded fantastic though.

I know very little about any history behind the ludwig clubdate. My drum Dimensions are as follows:

14 by 22 bass drum

10 by 13 rack tom

14 by 14 floor tom

I know that most club dates came with 20 inch bass drums, so mine is a bit of an anomaly. The tom sizes seem to be normal sizes but I am not a vintage drum expert.

I am interested in any information on ludwig club dates that any one could provide me. I need to replace one of the 22 inch bass drum's rims, which are wood, and I am preparing to possibly buy a 20 inch club date bass drum.

I would like to know if there any 18 inch club date bass drums, and if there are any other smaller tom sizes that were ever made.

Thanks for your Help!!

You should check the serial numbers - if they are close they probably came together (if there is no serial number they are early 60's or before). The 22 BD is usually earlier - the early configs (late 50's early 60's) were often 22-13 or 22-13-15. Later configs (late 60's) were often 20-12 or 20-12-14. If the serial number on the 14 is higher than the 22 and 13 it was probably added later - which happened a lot since they sold a lot of sets without floor toms and buyers would later add them.

I don't think they ever sold an 18" clubdate, though special order is possible (but unlikely someone would special order a clubdate drum since they were the lower priced line for Ludwig).

My serial number on the bass drum is 5160, which I know is very low and probably late 1963, and the rack tom is 5199. The floor tom does not have a serial number (it is missing, but there is a hole where it should be)

Hi,

If your kit is a 1963 Club Date, the keystone badges wouldn't have any serial numbers on them. Ludwig didn't start putting serial numbers on its badges until 1964.

In regard to the drum sizes, a review of the Ludwig Catalogs reveals the following for its Club Date kits:

1960 -- 14x22 bass drum

9x13 rack tom

12x15 floor tom

1962 -- same as above

1967 -- 14x20 bass drum

8x12 rack tom

14x14 floor tom

In all honesty, I'm not really sure how accurate any of the above is since I've still got my original 1963 Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl Club Date kit which came with a 14x22 bass drum, 9x13 rack tom and 16x16 Ludwig "Classic" floor tom. Go figure!

In very late 1963 Ludwig models went from 0 to th 7000's. So I do believe it is a 63. maybe i am wrong though.

ive got a database with 63-65 serial numbers in it. i do have a 1012 number listed on a nov27,1963 drum. but i also have a dec 4 1963 that was a pre serial.also a jan 12 1964 with 6709 number. so, yours could be late 63. hard to say with ludwig.
