ludwig brass super piccolo??

Loading...

hello all,

this is my first post here and I am happy to be part of the community here.

For those who are curious and like to surf, you can visit my web site at carltonjackson.com to know more about me and what I do in this musical world.

now to my question....

this is an identification one and has to do with this drum I've had for many years and it seems to be a ludwig piccolo sized drum with a brass shell and the rod running thru the inside of the drum (connected to the throw-off) and with brass rims and such.

any ID help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks and take care,

carlton

Any markings on or inside the drum? Any engravings on the hoops? Remove the head and check inside for dates, letters, etc. What is the size of the drum? A piccolo would be 3 1/2 or less. If it's 4 to 4 1/2 it's considered a "jazz" snare by some. The pix you took didn't show any badge/logo, it could be a Ludwig or possibly of german origin. Great looking drum! Have you tried it with calfskin heads?

I listen to the samples on your site, nice chops! Any of those tracks played with this snare?

thanks for the kudos and such and also, your great reply.

no tracks w/ this snare...it always seemed kind of delicate for any heavy work, but who knows. I bought it out of a window of a music store around 1980s or so.

Here is a okay shot of one of the hoops (bottom).

Also, no badge on this one, or markings on the inside of this brass shell.

The drum almost has a copper-ish patina to the shell.

thanks,

cj

Hi,

Your drum is a late 1920s 4x14 L&L Super-Ludwig Model with Artgold hardware...the shell has been buffed to the brass, my guess is that the shell was black nickel therefore your drum could have started out as an unengraved DeLuxe (Black Beauty)...there's also a chance that the shell was white enamel making it an Inspirational Model...btw: the snare guards are upside down...

hey there Mike (and the group)

That was an amazing post of what that drum is and just a testament to the kind of minds and souls that are here at this forum.

If you wouldn't mind me bugging you away from the forum, maybe I can get a line on the right source for a couple of replacement parts that someone may have to help get this 90% drum up to 100%.

thanks again for the wonderful info Mike, and to the group.

peace, cj
