Ludwig borrow parts from Slingerland?

Loading...

Started the restoration process on my 14x22 bass. Opened it up and removed the crumpled up newspaper I put in there (May 9, 1973, fun reading those ads). Looking around the interior I saw this, on the ride cymbal "L" arm mounting bracket.

It's companion looks like:

The "L" arm support looks like: (I know, it looks worse than it really is, but should clean up nicely)

It did clean up fairly nice:

Now bear in mind I've had these drums since 1964, and know positively they were never disassembled or modified in any way. They were not new when I got them. One previous owner I believe, and I never saw anything on this set that would make me think it was ever worked on.

Both Slingerland and WFL were in Chicago at that time. Could it have been a case that WFL ran out of washers? "Hey Fred, listen I need a favor, have any 15/16" washers we can borrow?"

Of course, it is just as possible that somewhere in this drums distant past, somebody DID disassemble it and mix parts. But I just can't shake the feeling that....no.

Doubtful. When Ludwig bought the company that manufactured Slingerland's snare cases, WFL II called Bud Slingerland and told him his case contract was canceled. Then he took the Slingerland case dies out on his boat and dropped them in the center of Lake Michigan. I don't think they would give each other the time of day. :D

As previously stated it would be a cold day in H@#*. the slingerland parts had to come from previous owner, NEVER from the factory,,singer

Interesting theory, but don't you think it would have been easier and more logical to go down to the corner hardware store and get some generic washers rather than go to your number one business rival and get some that are branded with that rival's name?

I have to agree with vintagemore2000 - the previous owner of the drums must have been the source of that washer.

Of course you are all probably correct. I can't imagine there was any shred of co-ompitition between Ludwig and Slingerland. Was just startled by the first glimpse ever, of the possibilty that this 60 year old set was not a virgin.
