Ludwig Black Wrap ID and Value

Loading...

Hello All,

I just signed up here, and would like to learn more about this kit I recently picked up. Its a players kit, its beat and needs work that I'm willing to do. I have a lot of questions so I'd appreciate all input.

I know they are 3 ply's by removing the skins, but why no serial number on the badges? Is there a source for replacement badges, these are really beat.

The black wrap has a leather look to it. Its only coming up on a couple of seams. What is this unique material and look? I've never seen it before.

Any resale value here if the kit was made respectable?

Here are some pics of what I'll be working on. Thanks for looking and for your feedback.

Looks like a Ludwig Hollywood kit that has been re-wrapped and re-badged.

Looks like a first gen. Rocker aka "standard" series, that someone tried to make into a black panther set.

Does it have the straight disappearing spurs on the bass drum?

Here's a link to the standard flyer in 1982

The link says an 82 rocker set has 6 ply. This has a 5 ply bass drum? I know my eyes are getting bad, but did Ludwig make a 5 ply kicker?

Thanks

Hi, This could be one of the last of the Ludwig S/L line, which is the end of the 'Standard' series and the beginning of the 'Rockers'. The badges (if they are original, send pix of the inside of the drums, showing the grommet) were used helter skelter during the change over... also why there are no serial numbers.

Shells were interchangeable as well. The S/L line and the very first Rocker's (and some later Standard's) got classic lugs as they had run out of the Standard lugs.

As the badge says, it's a USA drum. The bass rack tom mount is the earliest Rocker type, as is your straight disappearing spurs (Standard and some Standard Line or S/L type).

Please send more detailed pictures of the hardware and interior of the shells.

I don't remember that wrap being available on the S/L line or the early Rocker's, but that really doesn't mean a thing. Even if it wasn't a cataloged wrap, you could request something different for a fee, or Ludwig is also known for using up supplies on the end runs of a line of drums.

That is definitely NOT Black Panther, as the texture is nowhere near correct.
