Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl Downbeat

Yes I know the feeling. Not so much point in looking for other kits once you have the one you were really looking for. Any pictures of your ‘65 you are willing to share? It would be nice to see it.

I posted a photo in another thread:

This kit was recently given (yes, given!) to me by my cousin. He purchased it in 1965, played it for 2-3 years, and then basically tucked it away in a closet in cases. Except for some very minor pedal rash on the batter hoop, it looks brand new. I just can't get over the sound and looks of this kit, and I'm really enjoying the larger sizes (13-16-22) compared to what I played in the past.

I think you scored one heck of a set. It pretty much matches Ringo's first downbeat set in that it has the correct badge placement(centered on the floor tom), the rail mount and the correct pre-1965 hardware. The only real difference on Ringo's original set(the one bought by Jim Irsay) and this one is that Ringo's set did not have serial numbers. His later downbeat(the one used on Ed Sullivan) was modified to use a Rogers swivo mount or it would also be very similar.

I'm thinking this is a pretty valuable set and if it were me, I would take the time to hunt down the correct inlaid hoops and probably just drop the cash. IMO it will be a worthy investment especially if you paid a good price for the set. Congratulations!

Thanks WFLKirt. I realise it is pretty special though I didn’t pay so much actually. Seller didn’t want more, just seemed to want someone who would cherish it which I certainly will. Good advice on the inlays as the kit is in very good condition. If I keep the hoops and find the correct inlays would it hurt the kit to repaint them or would you advise against it? Also it is missing the wing bolts from the flow tom legs as well as one of the floor tom legs. Any thoughts on where to get these? Apart from that it is pretty much perfect.
