Ludwig Bass T-Rods and Claws

Loading...

Hey all,

Recently bought a Ludwig Rocker bass with classic lugs. After pulling it apart, I noticed that the t-rods and claws were not the same as either later Rockers or the normal Ludwig t-rods and claws I'm used to.

Anyone know if these are legitimate Ludwig claws and rods? Or are they just a pretty solid repro?

They're on the left. Right is your run of the mill Ludwig claw and t-rod I pulled off a Vistalite. As you can see, the shape is wrong on the claws and the t-rod doesn't have that small disc around where the shaft meets the handle. In addition the handle is about 2 mm thinner than the Ludwig one.

I'm not aware of any repro Ludwig rods or claws. My inclination would be that the Rocker ones came from a different supplier whose tooling was slightly different. It might be that Ludwig had their Rocker hardware made overseas as part of the cost savings for those lower priced sets. I've only had a couple of Rocker sets pass through my hands but I noticed that various bits like the hoops and even the T rods were different from the typical USA made hardware used on their upper end drums of the time.
