I recently picked up a 20" Ludwig Club date from the 60'sin original Champagne wrap. The bass hoop is burgundy, the other hoop is missing. Did Ludwig ever paint their hoops red / burgundy during this era?
It has a 1/2" channel inlay.
Thanks.

I have seen plenty of blue hoops that were originals. Is your drum a single tension drum by any chance?

Mike,
It has the standard Club Date lugs on it.
Thank you.
For reference : look up item # 371736172004 in ebay. This is a Club Date I've listed similar to your hoop. Probably not exactly like it ? but in bronze mist lacquer.

Hobbs,
That is the same hoop and gold sparkle inlay, although a portion of my inlay is also missing.
Part of the wrap is missing on my bass and I can see the Mahogany outer ply, so it likely never had the cool finish that your drums do.
I'm going to go with no, they never offered any BD hoops that were not black during that era. The new ones are available in natural wood finish tho...

I've seen others, by the way, the same color & blue as Mr. Layton mentioned.
I've seen Blue with gold inlays for blue sparkle bass drums. I've also seen green with silver inlays. I'm almost positive I have seen Burgundy ones as well. Black is by far the most common but wasn't the only color they painted hoops. Especially on painted sets but also on some sparkle sets (at least Blue).
This seems to be a late 50's/early 60's thing. As the DuCo lacquered sets began to fall by the wayside and production levels went up they probably opted to just stock black paint and use it universally (except on Thermogloss drums of course). Black goes with everything after all.
Of course it's not hard to repaint hoops in any color someone liked, but if that paint is lacquer (rather than enamel) then it's probably factory.
I just checked the '64 catalog for reference. There are several sets shown with painted hoops that were the color of the drum itself.
My 1968 Thermogloss has non black hoops. Had some other duco drums with non black hoops.
