Ludwig 6-Ply Drums

I know there is much discussion about the difference between 3-ply and 6-ply Ludwigs. I restored these from orphan 6-plys and used these in the studio and they sang. I am on the side of the fence of 6-plys can sound great. I did have to give some attention to the edges in order to get them to tune up well. Here are specs:

9x13, 16x16, 16x24. Kick is a virgin with the dual spurs. Refinished in black glass glitter. Emperor coated on top, Ambassador coated on the bottom. PS2 coated on the batter kick, medium original Ludwig head on the reso side.

I've owned many 6 ply shells they are awesome sounding shells.

I'm a fan of 6-ply Luddies. I prefer their sound over 3-ply for rock.

Great job on the kit; looks great.

I have a 16x24 6-ply kick and it sounds great with a SKIII and Regulator. I use coated or suede ambassadors for the tom batters.

The main difference I see in the 3ply and the 6ply is the weight. The 6ply shells are much heavier and kind of a pain to lug around to gigs. I know there are some who will say the 3ply shells sound better, but not to me, they both sound great and very similar.

My orphans kit consists of a 6 ply super classic floor tom, a 4 ply Rockers (classic mini lugs) 12" tom, and 6 ply 22" Rockers classic lug bass drum. The floor seems like it weighs more than my bass drum ! Lol ;). I prefer the 3 ply personally, but my drums were pretty cheap , so i got them anyway ..
