Ludwig : 2 Rail consolettes on a 60's BD

Is it common for 2 rail consolettes to have been drilled on a 60's BD? I'm guessing this is a custom job - but did kits sometimes come this way, how often, does it detract from originality, value, etc -

Have a jolly day! Chris

FWIW, In the 50's a second rail was often used for bongo drums. I've seen a few 60's drums with second rails. Where is the second rail located?

Thank you Mr. C -

I do not have the 1965 BD in question; it is one I am interested in buying. There's 1 rail on the left hand side, as expected. On the other side (in line as far as I can tell) are the holes drilled for the other missing consolette.

I think I've seen this before, rarely??? I've definitely seen where there are 2 tom mounts on a single consolette ... so I'm thinking this is a tad fishy.

Best - Chris

Usually when folks wanted an extra tom on their factory 22, 13, 16 with rail mount, they'd often install (themselves or have their dealer do it) the double tom bracket mount (often using one of the holes from the rail mount for the 9 o'clock position screw of the double tom bracket). But I think earlier on a lot of folks simply put a rail conso on the opposite side.

It takes away from the value a bit.

Wouldn't a second rail interfere with the cymbal mount?

yep. sure would..

thats something to consider. is there a cymbal mount on it now or evidence of one? if not, it could have been special ordered like that.

Thanks guys.

Yes, the rail would affect the cymbal mount to some degree, limiting the arm on the inside for sure. It'd have to be fitted from the reso side.

I'm passing on the kit BTW. Chris

Bingo! Give the guy a cigar... That's exactly what happened. I personally own one like this, and have seen many the same way. In mine, it looks factory, but isn't. Two of the holes (top two, not using the cymbal mount hole) are 1/32 off the others. It wouldn't be that way if it had been drilled in a jig in the factory. I took the right hand rail off (and just store the 2nd 12" tom it came with) and had the holes plugged and some tiny bits of wrap removed from the bottom of the bass drum hoop to cover the plugs. If you don't stare at it for a moment, you can't see it.

Yeah, I did say 2nd 12" rack tom... lots of folks used two same sized rack toms back then.

I'm glad you passed on the kit Chris. That would have bugged the hell outta me.

Good luck.

I have prime Superclassic SBP snare I've been dying to match with the rest for a few years now. Maybe it's me, but I think SBP is a rare bird, more so than what the experts say. The badge #'s were perfect. But I really aim for the cream only -

Thanks for all the kind, helpful comments - Chris
