Ludwig 1966 Classic Downbeat Burgundy set +++

Loading...

My kit is very rare. Stamped Dec. 7, 1966, Burgundy Downbeat, 5" Supraphonic Snare, 13 Inch Zildjian hi hat pair. 20 In sizzle - no rivets - warn hole. Original snare stand and cymbal stands/post. Bought it when I was 10 in 1968. The bottom heads were stripped when I bought it. Family I bought it from in Southeastern PA could not tell me where it came from just wanted to get rid of it. Woodstock??? Well used and loved. Am I really doing this??? Kit has another set of no name I added with 20-12-16. They all work great together. Old Thor snare also and another ride/crash also. Well what do you think???

Well, I think the first thig you need to do is get a real camera, set them up in appropriate set up, clean the dust off, and then photogragh them properly. Then take those and post them so we can see what you really have, so that we can see the issues, and make a better determination of value. From these pix, you won't get very far here, even with a desirable config in a desirable wrap.

Mad Mike.

Ok. I did not respond on here because you left your number. I called the number you sent and left a message. When you did not return my message for days I was of the mind that your private message was at best, bogus, at worst...

Thanks for the reply so we could clear our miscommunications up.

I guess I am a little touchy when it comes to my kit...

I will send my number in private message if you wish to talk.

Hey, I really am not trying to be ugly. We see so many kits, it is hard to tell the good, the bad and the b-fugly. Looks like you have some MIJ drums mixed in there. The white, or rather silver...or whatever it is looks like a Star drum. Are some of these older Japanese drums? I really have the desire to help, but good pix are important man. If the burgundy kit is all there and in good condtion, it could bring good money. Do NOT take advise from people PM-ing you with stupid offers. There are many people that troll this site silently looking to rip off unsuspecting people such as yourself. Of course, greed is a powerful drug, but many here truly have the desire to shoot straight.

If you have a MIJ kit for sale, for example, I can tell you, in most cases, and this is because of conditions, both of the drums and the market, they are not worth more than a couple of hundred at the best. After they have been worked into a good sounding kit, and the wrap has been restored, the chrome deep cleaned etc., I can tell you they can go for up to 400-500. I have one kit that I would not take a dime less than 500. However, I have had many good drummers sit down and play them, telling me they would love to gig my drums. Not one person that has played these has said anything derogatory. I worked hard to get them here, but they simply souund amazing. They did not when I got them, they sounded like a MIJ is "suppoesed to sound".

Now, you have a set of desrirable color and sizes, so they could be worth over a thousand, if in good, clean condition. However, from these pix, you in the lowballers dream world. They will take advantage of your ignorance. I am not saying you are stupid. Many people don't truly understand the meaning of ignorance. It means not educated on certain facts, in this case. Do yourself a favor, get a little education, study the forum, ask some questions, particpate some, and the truth will come to you.

Cheers, and Welcome!

Re: Questions About Recent Purchase..

I am new here and don't know all vintage drum stuff but I do know the burgundy Ludwig downbeat kit. I have owned one for 42 years and have been researching it's value for 2 years.

Your kit ($400 WOW) is a combo of the classic and downbeat kits. The 9"x13" tom & 16"x16" floor tom are from the classic kit. The 14"x20" bass drum is from the downbeat kit and is rare. The burgundy rap is rare also.

Here is what I have found for sale via the internet. As with everything, value is what someone will pay for it.

New:

Steve Maxwell Vintage and Custom Drums.

Gretsch Curly Maple 20/12/14/5.5x14 Vintage Tribute Kit $4,240.00

Used/rebuilt:

Ludwig 1960s Burgundy Sparkle Downbeat set

Excellent kit $2600

Reconstruct, all parts/no wrap:

1960s Ludwig 12 x 8 Tom Drum w Hardware

7 Bids $122.50

1960s Ludwig 14 x 14 Floor Tom Drum w Hardware

20 Bids $204.98

ebay

Wrap: Sparkle g -Drum Cov. Burgundy Ludwig Style- Full Sheet 24x54 $96.00

This info is for a downbeat. Your 13 & 16 seem to be less desirable but $400 who cares!!!

The snare value is variable.

Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum 14x5 Supra Vintage 60s

Item condition: Used

Time left: 23d 22h (Jul 07, 201020:40:16 PDT)

Price: US $345.00

ebay

So...The Ludwig downbeat is the first kit called a Ringo kit as this was the first kit he used, making it more desirable and rare. The burgundy downbeat is really rare. I have read it is/was Ringo's favorite and he has/had a Burgundy sparkle kit in his home.

Over the last 2 years the Burgundy stuff for sale has dried up, globally. We may own museum pieces...

I found a classic kit that was for sale from this site in 2009:
