Ludwig 1920's-30's sizzle

Loading...

I got this 12" Ludwig sizzler with a very old kit.

It is missing the large rivets. (see pics)

Where can I find some? Takes 6 and they say Ludwig on each one.

You might try scavenging them off some old tamborine.

I don't believe these were used as jingles on Tambourines. You may also see many Ludwig & Ludwig washers on ebay that may look like what you need, but they are different. L&L washers were used on bass drums, under the center guide posts of single tension drums, & occasionally as inside washers. They are much smaller. The discs used on the "Sizzle" cymbal are 1 1/2 " diameter.

I know these were not tamborine jingles. But that's about the closest thing to something like what you're looking for. Finding originals like that would be harder than finding Ark of the Covenant. I'm a believer in adaptive re-use.

There was a new report yesterday , that an "Ark" has just been discovered. (BTW, the word "Sizzle" is a bit of a misnomer . The discs on these cymbals don't sound , or react like rivets, to create a very pleasing voice. They hardly react at all when played w/ a normal stick, but only barely come alive when used w/ a notched stick. Even then it's not much of an effect).

At 12" and very old, I would guess it was a BD pedal accessory from a party kit and not to be hit with a stick !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Well I'll tell you how this started. I bought a 1940's rolling bomber kit

and the late owners older kit came with it. It has me fascinated. The snare is in pieces. N/Brass shell, wood hoops 15", no heads and missing most of the strainer which bolted into the wood hoop. The bass drum is a 30" monster

that has a trap tray that mounts on the top and 5 temple blocks, no cracks, plus a wood block, some nifty old maracas, the sizzle cymbal and 2 10" big bell cymbals stamped Ludwig. a pair of paper thin A Zildjian Hi Hats and a metal hoop on a handle I think is called a coat hanger for playing cymbals.

No name on anything but snare has 1927 stamped on the top hoop in Roman numerals.

Our home is Art Deco so it would look good here.

No telling what 2 15" vintage calf heads are gonna cost me.
