I have an opportunity to by this 1918 Ludwig brass snare. Any opinions on their value would be appreciated, thanks.
Ludwig 1918 Brass Snare
The 1918 should be a two piece heavy shell. These are desirable. Depends on the size, number of legs and condition of course.
Yep, it's a two piece, heavy brass shell, 4x14 with 6 lugs and is in good condition.
Looks pretty good. I've got one just like it. It may be my eyes, but it sure looks like a 5x14. I certainly could be wrong though. I see that it has a modern snare butt on it. Probably an extra hole or two there. Also appears to have an added on fixture for a lamp/heater most likely.
The owner said it's a 4x14, what do you think it's worth? Why would that fixture be for a lamp/heater?
The 6 luggers just don't command the big price. I think I paid 250 for mine. It was all original , but not as nice as yours. And yes to the lamp/heater.
Well, it's not mine, the owner wants $250, I wasn't sure what they go for. I still don't understand the fixture for a lamp/heater. Please fill me in.
It’s for calf heads, when it’s damp or humid the heads stretch. The lamp/heater would keep them tight.
Thanks for that information. So I suppose $250 is a fair price.
Really , of course

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
