Ludwig 14" x 5" Acrolite - Age?

Loading...

Hi,

I've recently purchased a "blue & olive" badged Acrolite snare drum (grey painted finish) in excellent condition. The serial number is 3034572, which I think is late 70’s but I'm not sure after checking all the available information on the web of its exact date of manufacture. It looks to have been included originally in an "education set" with case, stand & practice pad. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Acrolites were almost always sold in those suitcase things. They came with a stand, a Gladstone-style black rubber practice pad, a couple of method books and a pair of sticks. I think that was it....?

Anyway, they are easily the most ubiquitous snare drum on the planet...and also one of the very best snare drum designs on the planet! Call it an 8-lug Supra without the chrome! Call it the Supra's "ugly" sister! Because they were often sold to kids, they were some of the most "battle-tested" snare drums out there! And they obviously endure.

Usually, Acrolites sell for between $50-$150 depending on year and condition. The one I play was free. A friend gave it to me in a drum set sale as a perk. It's like, a 1984 model -nothing special about it -except that it's the drum I use on most of my gigs!

I just picked this Acrolite Student Kit up from Craigs List. This is a great snare drum. I remember them around in high school. This must be the one you have. I took it completely apart and cleaned it up. This drum is in excellent condition. The stand is really nice and I use it with one of my jazz kits. Sturdy hard case too. Billy Gladstone practice pad. Got it all for $30.00 I lucked out!
