Ludwig 1400 Flat Base Cymbal Stands

Loading...

From MastroSnare

Very occasionally you'll see just the top sections of 1400's for sale on eBay, but seldom. The reason there's tons of bases is because there's lots around from old snare stands, which are not that popular, while the cymbal stands are pretty coveted because they're lightweight and small for gigging.

What I meant was that evidently eBay seller removed the flat bases from the snare stands and was selling the orphaned baskets but keeping the bases to convert them into cymbal stands. (BTW, even with an opening bid of $4.99 for six Ludwig & WFL snare baskets, they didn't sell.)

It doesn't seem like there are be enough spare original cymbal stand top sections floating around to make this worthwhile, but this guy must be using something.

Does anyone know of a repro cymbal stand top section that would work for this? Where would someone who is selling orphaned snare baskets find the parts to convert the remaining flat bases into complete cymbal stands? I've got a flat base WFL snare stand, and I'd like to do this conversion too if the parts are available.

Thanks for the info on this thread, I'd been wondering about that, especially the Luddy bases difference (lack thereof). I know they had the bare metal t-handles even in the late '80's when I bought my first cymbal stand, which came with it; the cheapest one I could find, the Luddy $19.99 stand!

While we're at it, who knows the makes of these stands (I don't!):

The snare stand in the top left pic is a Walberg & Auge like they sold with Gretsch in the 50's. That's another clue to the age of my Grestch RB silver hidden screws on the diamond plates no labels (whew!) kit - it came with the flat based Wally Wallberg, not the tripod as shown here.

The stand on the right I don't know but the legs point it in the direction of 80's at least. Is that a black Ludwig handle?

The bottom one is a Walberg & Auge base (or imitation - I have one I don't think they made that looks like that) and the middle section with that I'm not sure... possibly from a Ludwig 1400 'cause it looks like wingbolt in a threaded hole, not the type I'm used to seeing with W & A's.

Great, thanks for the info, I thought the top left was a W&A; that's my favorite stand! I was thinking the top right was a Slingy maybe? Or maybe some Japanese type.

Not sure if that's a Slinger or not...

I love the Walberg & Auge stands, they are by a landslide my favorites. They do vary in quality though - the chrome falls of in sheets on some. They were offered in nickel finish or chrome. I prefer the nickel... funny the chrome ones were more expensive in the day.

Ludwig-dude I checked out JamminSam, and the pic looks great but it says "Wing Bolts 4 pc bag of different sizes/shapes............$4.99

Note:* Sizes, shapes, thread size may differ from picture." so I guess you'd have to phone them.

Here's a 1400 like you would have bought in 1969, except the cymbal wing nut and washer under the cymbal are wrong. There's a gap at the red arrow where they sometimes pull out, this one needs pushed back in. I've had them fall off at gigs. Those are the nice chrome Mickey Mouse wingbolts. And the yellow arrow is the sticker saying not to take out the middle tube and tighten the wingbolt or you'd break it - I've done it!

A pair of Atlas cymbal stands... red arrow is older type and yellow newer, and the green arrow is the Mickey Mouse galvinized only model the went to later - I didn't like that move (BOO!):

Here's an 80's hi hat (left) with (yellow) another type wingbolt. The stand on the right is a current Ludwig flat base that I dislike. The red arrow is the new type wingbolts, and the green arrow is the Made in Taiwan label... kinda sad:

I bought two NOS in box 70's #1329 stands... they were for mounting wooden practice pads on:

Here's what the top looked like (they had to use the red arrow MM bolt on the top, the yellow arrow bolt wouldn't turn there):

I made a wooden top for one, covered it with no-slip rubber and it's a nice stand for my laptop:

Those arrows made me dizzy I need to lie down.

Here's some more Wally's, as sold by Gretsch... the stand on your left (my right) is a Walberg cymbal stand in nickel, it's my favorite stand, and the one on the right (my left) is a Walberg snare stand in chrome. The snare stand is like the one that came with my Gretsch set, but the Gretsch stand had orange-red rubber on the basket arms:

They have feet like this, many survive from the 50's totally intact:

I love the tilters on the Walbergs:

W&A made stands for Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Camco and others... here's the W&A WFL hihat base... it's pretty much the same as the Gretsch Flintstone model:

This is the wingbolt on that hihat stand, note the bottom of the stand is nickel and the top is chrome because it's been Frankenstein'd:

I threaded the top of the pull rod and don't use a clutch... I wanted it to look like Buddy's on that drum battle album with him and Gene Krupa where Buddy's pic is reversed:

There's definitely some penicillin on that old K - I lick it when I feel a cold coming on!

Here's some W&A info:
