For a student model,do you feel these drums could play well in todays music scene?..I hear they are similar to a jazz fest minus a couple of lugs,also i was informed they are not a maple shell but a blended one??

Absolutely. A drummer friend of mine, much younger, used mine to record some stuff for a guy he was playing with. He borrows it a lot. They are great drums.

They are great drums. Yes, they are a "blended" shell, as you say...They are 3-ply drums, in other words.

A lot of recordings of "today's" music are made with old drums.
I think the shell of the pioneer is the same shell Ludwig used on the jazz fest.
I also think the makeup of those shells varied, depending on when it was made.
