Looking for Vistalite Snare Suggestions Last viewed: 4 days ago

I have a ‘70s Vistalite 5 x 14 snare and cannot get any sound out of it that I like. The tone always sounds so low no matter what I try; even cranking the head tension. Does anyone have any suggestions for tuning and/or head selection to get at least a half-ways decent sound? I currently have a Remo Ambassador Coated batter, Remo hazy snare side head, and Puresound 20 strand snare wires.

are your puresound wires the custom snare wires? if they are try a set of their new steel wires! or try a set of steel wires period, the puresounds maybe to dark sounding thru the vistalite shell!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I've got the same size one here... they tend to be a deep tone. Turn off the dampener.... use a steel snare wire.... like the Ludwig ones. My favorite head for them is Ludwig Power Collar...... They sound great, don't over-ring and take a whupping. Clear power collar for me. From a technical standpoint, the shell is thin, and a bit flexible... this means that it's going to "give in" to the tension, and drop pitch a little. the Ludwig branded drum heads fit these drums 10X better than anything else... I know it sounds a little loopy, but it's my experience. Remo's curve at the edge is too great to seat deeply on these drums. Again, I know I sound crazy, but if you were looking at it through a clear drumhead, you'd see what I mean.

Over and over I say........Ludwig drums LIKE ludwig heads....... hell, all drums I have tried them on like ludwig heads. My Sonor's like Remo, but like Ludwigs too....... My slingerlands like Ludwig heads the best..... There's something about the FIT. everyone likes to tell me I'm nuts, but when you see how easily they sit on the drums, you'll get it. They make tuning a snap compared to any competitor I've used.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll give your suggestions a try.

vexorgtr, I'm assuming you would suggest a Ludwig head for the snare side as well?

Yeah.. Medium WeatherMaster Snare is what I use... but those are not nearly the big deal the batter is. The very thin nature of the SS head tends to make them mount up OK... so if you've got a med or thin one on there now, you're cool.

vexorgtr,

You were right, that worked perfectly. 110% improvment! Ludwig heads seem to fit vintage Ludwig's the best both physically and musically. I replaced the heads on my 60's Superclassic set while I was at it. I had fairly new Remo PS3's on the them and switched to Ludwig Medium Coated batter and they sound much warmer now, excellent! Thanks.

Glad it worked for you. Ludwig's head line can be a little deceptive... what Ludwig calls "Heavy" is a 10mil thick ply... Like Remo's medium (A). The material ludwig uses in my finding takes a great deal longer to wear out.

The Ludwig drum head designs are fairly simple, but effective. PowerCollar, Clear Heavy, or SilverDot are common batters for tom toms on my sets.

Heavy Coated is common on my snares as a batter... they are everywhere on my drums... Every one but my Vistalite actually... LOL. (It has a clear PC). I use either medium or heavy clears on bottom.. a heavy clear will give MORE sustain than a medium. It's a physics thing.

Glad they worked for you... Price wise they should be about the same as Remo.. but they take longer to wear out... and I like the thin collar... it makes the FIT.

Attack drum heads have the thin collar too, but there's been some QC issues with them.. and I love the durability on the Ludwig Weather Masters.
