Looking for forgiving resos (out of round Ludwigs)

Loading...

I have a set of 3 ply Ludwigs, and they spent some time without bottom heads. I assume this has resulted in the out of roundedness of the reso side of the drums. The batter sides seem to be ok. I've tried to fit them with ambassadors, but the heads aren't forgiving enough to seat nicely. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance

Ok, let me try this again. I've used the search engine, and it seems there are many people mentioning that Aquarians, specifically the vintage series are quite forgiving. There is little mention of Evans. I have a set of regular texture coated Aquarians and they fit ok. I'm not a big fan of the heads themselves. I've not tried the regular clears, but based upon my Aquarian experiences, I'm not willing to go out and pick up a set just yet. Are Evans Genera heads more forgiving than Remos? I would certainly appreciate any help.

You might want to try Remo Diplomat heads as resos, they are QUITE thin and pretty much conform to the contours of the shell as long as you don't have to SQUEEZE 'em on, they should do the job.

Hey there, BegD !

With thin-ply re-ring shells, you can "train" 'em back a little bit. A "forgiving" reso isn't the answer, though. Discipline is.

First make sure the hoop is round. That, in itself, will help coax the shell a bit toward behaving more roundly.

Use whatever type of reso you normally would. As long as you can get it onto the shell without a hammer, seat as best you can, put the hoop back on, and tighten her a little more than you normally would.

Place the drum on a carpeted floor, take off your shoe, and step onto the center of the head once or twice. Believe me, the head and the shell can easily withstand it.

That will fully seat the head, and possibly begin the discipline of coaxing the shell back a bit toward roundness. And if none of that works, well, hunt down another one on eBay, then put the out-of-round one to rest.

Hope that helps.
