Looking for drum and hardware for Star (?) set in Tiger Pearl

Loading...

Hello to all. I've been a lurker on this site but just joined up, as it seems to be an excellent source of information with knowledgeable and friendly participants. I really appreciate having forums like these!

I have recently come across a stunningly beautiful Japanese drum set (well, 2 drums, but they ARE a set!) in what looks to be the Tiger Pearl wrap. I have the 20x16 bass and 8x12 tom. The bass has the original hoops, believe it or not, and they appear to be plastic (?). The kit is similar to the "Stagelite" outfit in this catalog for the Star line, with the exception of the tom mount, which is the rail consolette mount type.

http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=6&now=4

I have the bass drum shells with lugs, attached tom mount and hoops, and the mounted tom with lugs, and that is all. Sadly, the badges have been removed, but the outline is a visable oval style. As I would love to make this into a fully functional kit, I need:

* Bass drum: 12 tympani-style tension rods and claws, a pair of spurs, and possibly the rest of the tom mount (I can always use a separate stand).

* Ride tom: a pair of hoops and 12 tension rods, and last but not least...

* A complete 14x15 floor tom (or one similar).

I know that I'm dreaming even asking about a floor tom (and even more so a snare!), but I just had to ask, with the hopes at very least to find the hardware for the bass and mounted tom. I could eventually find a black floor tom that would work, but I'd like to hold out hope that one with the same wrap is out there somewhere! Also, I've thought about the possibility of purchasing new Gibraltar hardware, but I'm not sure the hoops would fit the mounted tom, and the tension rods would have to be metric. I just thought some of you guys may have a line on this sort of thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Hi,

Indeed, Star made for a certain time plastic hoops. I have an orphan bass drum which has them as well.

The positive news: You may find a matching floor tom, size-wise ...

Star made also oval badges under several other names: Please have a look here:

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=14073

So any of those other names will also be a Star-built floor tom.

The negative one: It will be nearly impossible to find it in the matching wrap ...

I have a pair of those BD spurs, but I assume it will be too costy to send them to the USA (I'm located in Germany).

I'm sure, member Mikey777 will be here in a short time to offer you the missing parts.

Thanks so much for the reply, Ralf. I agree that shipping may be prohibitive between Germany and the US, but, there again, it all depends on availability! As far as the FT is concerned, I will probably have to settle for another wrap. Basic black would work if nothing else. I used to have a set of Tamas with the Accutune (?) hoops and that bass drum sounded huge!

Wow that is the wrap!

Thanks for your eagle eye, alot2008! Bowing You ROCK!

I never dreamed in a thousand years a snare popping up. If it looks like it's not going for much, I just may bid on it and suffer the cost of shipping!

Hey Mikey777 Just want to say that your awesome Japanese drum site is where I researched these drums! Not being really "forum savy", I didn't know then that it was affiliated with this forum! Anyway, thanks for the reply. I'll go over to the wanted forum now!

Hi Rick, Welcome from Norman! When you get over this way, let me know and we can get together for lunch or something. I will likely have some parts as well, but not what you need at the moment. Mikey may pick up a complete kit, and I think you should take him up on it and take a complete one. I can help get it squared away as this is what I do. Also, I am going to have a complete blue sparkle Majestic (Star) kit for sale soon, if you know any students needing a great jazz kit. It is 20-12-12-16 and matching wood snare, all in 6 and 9 ply mahogany shells. This kit needs a new home as I am needing the room so I can get my next project going, a 20-12-14 3 ply kit that is going to get a veneer of possibly bubinga. Since the original wrap is already gone, I am going to do the bubinga and hopefully I can make them sound at least as good as my WMP 22-13-16 kit.

Anyway, again, welcome to the forum!

Hey jonnistix! Good thing that you live in Norman, as I am just not opening my eyes to these cool drums and have a feeling that I will be the proud owner of a few more of these kits, lol! I live in Tulsa so we should definitely get together. Sometime the wife and I want to go spend a weekend in OKC to do some antiquing, pawn shop jumpin', etc. so I'll give you a holler when we do. I'd like to see your shop where you do your magic. If you are ever over this way give me a shout. Like I was telling Mikey, I think that what you guys are doing by rescuing these drums and providing a resource for parts and orphans is a very cool thing. Japanese drums may be under-appreciated by a lot of folks, but that just leaves more for folks like us, lol! Hey I bet that kit that you are going to wrap in bubinga is going to be beautiful! I used to restore vintage jukeboxes and old radios and as such frequented a place in Tulsa (I forget the name - I'm not sure that they still exist) where we got all of our veneers. I did mainly the electronics and apprenticed under a renowned restorer, so I got the opportunity to learn a lot about veneering and metal restoration. Anyway I can appreciate all of the work that goes into these projects!
