Looking for Camco information... Last viewed: 4 weeks ago

Hey, I'm looking for any and all information on Camco drums while they were owned by Kustom and made in Chanute, KS. I think that was for a very short time in either the late 60s or early 70s.

I live less than 30 minutes south of Chanute, and will be attempting to glean the local "Camco history" from local sources as well.

Thanks,

Bill

I've owned a few Chanute Camco drums/kits in the past.

I was once told they were assembled from remaining Oaklawn inventory with the only change being a badge with a different city (Chanute) and a new logo. Also, I was told the shells were stored in the rail cars that they travelled to Kansas in until needed for assembly.

Quality was about the same as late era Oaklawn drums (mufflers, floor tom leg brackets mounted in the wrong position occasionally, etc.).

Hi Bill, I've heard most all of the above mentioned by Stallwart. They weren't there long before moving to LA.

Mine are LA Camco's, so that's what I've always endeavored to glean information about.

I do know that as in LA, there are a number of 'badgeless' kits from Chanute. At least that's what I've heard. It seems they would run out of badges and ship the kits anyway.

Stallwart --

What part of Arkansas? I'm about an hour west of Joplin Mo, so NW Ark isn't far from me. Thanks for the info!

Fish --

Keep your eyes and ears open out there. At some point, I'm going to be thinking about owning a set (I know, I know, I've said I'm NOT a collector, but you know, the harder this bug bights the worse it gets!), preferably of course one built (assembled) in the Kansas plant.

It's not going to be a speedy job, but I intend to make the trip to Chanute someday, visit the newspaper office, chat with some people... I'm sure I can find out something! I'll be posting info here...

Ready? I'm READY now... it's just that my "pocket book" isn't.

Ain't life sometimes the pits? I caught this bug AFTER I got laid off my "cushy" job that paid really well! And, I worked a 12-hour night shift, but worked 4 days then had 4 days off. Back then I had more time to do this stuff, and more money.

Now my salary is about HALF what I had; I work M-F with only S-S off; and I'm old enough that when I get home I don't dare set down before I work on drums OR I take the chance I don't get back up... 'til time to go to bed.

:)

1971-73. I've owned many Chanute era kits and most of them were dogs. I can usually guess if it's Oaklawn or Chanute by the lack of quality control on the Chanute drums. The interior lacquer usually has drip marks as well. But this one has got to be one of the best sounding kits I've ever owned.

Walnut stain 24/14/18! The 5x14 COB snare is also Chanute. In typical Chanute fashion the chrome has lines in the finish and is peeling in a few places.
