Anyone have a 14x14 Pearl President phenolic shelled floor tom for sale?
Prefer in gold strata or root beer pearl wrap, but anything will do.
Thanks.

Good luck in your search, but I don't think you'll find one... because I'm not sure they were ever made. The phenolic shells were only available in the 1969 and 1970 catalogs (American market), and there is no mention of a 14x14 option in either...

Phenolic shells debuted in 1966 and first appeared in catalogues in '67. Sizes listed were 22/13/16 with a 5.5x14 snare.
But looky here:
So that's 14x22, 14x20, 12x18, 5x14 (8 lug) 5.5x14 (8 lug), 5.5x14 (10 lug), 6.5x14 (8 lug), 6.5x14 (10 lug), 8x12, 9x13, 14x14, 16x16, plus 13/14 timbales and Euro concert toms in the 8 brothers sizes. Add Marching and Concert drums and the mind reels.
Oh my!

Second to that,
I was working for Pearl early to mid 70's never came across a 14" FT in the Dyna range, just 16 & 18"..
Cheers
If you would, please cllick the link fellows. It's right there in black and white.
Top, left-hand side. Page 1, their top of the line range. Note the P-** prefixes denoting President phenolic shells. Now look at all those sizes listed. (BTW, no 18" FT.)
The rest of the catalogue lists wood-shelled non-President drums as indicated by their various model number prefixes. I know it's Japanese, but give this a thorough going over and it's clear. They made President phenolic-shelled drums in all those sizes I listed above, as well as in their marching and concert lines.
I see no reason to limit our inquiry to the US market when the internet makes everything available. As for what we've personally seen, that's going to be a fraction of the whole no matter who we are. Give this list a good perusal and then think of how little the US catalogues show by comparison. Certainly not enough to reach that conclusion. Now figure the tiny likelihood that Pearl made all these other sizes just for Brazil.

First of all, let me say I appreciate this added information.
Secondly, let me say I never intended to "limit" this to the American market; it's just that the American market information is what I have access to and experience with... which is why I mentioned the American market in the first place!

Right on, that was my case too. It was a real eye-opener to later start seeing Pearl cats from other markets. I would have expected much less variation.
In just a couple months of watching I have seen two 20" BDs on ebayUSA, which likely came in 20/12/14 sets, so frupy's quest probably isn't that far-fetched. He might find one stateside yet.
Another "option" that might be possible in a phenolic shell might be the "Vari-Pitch" cannons. In the late 70s when Pearl brought those things out, the shells on those are listed in the 1978 (again, American market) catalog as being "phenolic shells" (page 11). I had read somewhere at one point that phenolic shells not sold when available earlier had simply been stored in a warehouse unused until the Vari-Pitch Cannons were introduced and then Pearl started using them up. IF that is the case, their VPC14 which was a 10.5x14 shell with a 12" roto-tom would probably started it's life as a 14x14 shell!
Now my head really is spinning!
What was the deal with the phenolic shells, anyway? Why were they not around very long? I've got a couple of toms here (8x12 and 9x13, Presidents) and they actually seem to sound and produce about the same as the fiberglass shells... my head is still spinning... The fiberglass shells enjoyed a relatively long life cycle of production, but the phenolic shells didn't. Anyone got any ideas?
One thing for sure, this thread has stimulated my interest in the phenolic shells and has caused me to start digging again...
Bill
The Vari-Pitch toms all had the same depth shells too. A post-apocalyptic option at least. (Boy was I bummed when I got a set of those! The shells seemed to contribute nothing to their sound - they sound like rotos. The snare is worst production drum I ever heard.)
I like the fiberglass shells pretty well (especially concert toms), but I love the phenolic bass and toms. Super-efficient energy transfer. I put diecast hoops on my toms and get a nuclear Gretsch tone. Superb roundness and bearing edges.
My all-time favorite Pearl drums are the first serious set they ever made.Sumo Dude
