Lido Supreme...just a Lido with sour cream?

Hi folks. Sorry for the lame Taco Bell joke. Thought I'd use this rainy summer day to show off my latest NE Ohio barn find.

The story...

I drove an hour each way in pouring rain to answer a CL ad that promised "free spider webs" along with all the drum stuff pictured, for $300 firm. The pictures were the usual, dark and out of focus, but they made my spidey sense tingle enough to make the drive. On arrival I was greeted by a nice gentleman with a righteous handle-bar mustache, he walked me to the barn as he relayed the common tale of a son who had lost interest in playing and moved out leaving them with a bunch of drum clutter. It didn't take long to see that his price was fair, so I paid the mustacioed man and promptly filled my Volvo wagon to the gills with dusty gear.

The drums...

1960's Lido Supreme double bass kit 22,22,12,13,16

1965-ish Ludwig Supraphonic COA 14x5 snare

nice set of HandZ On (Cannon) bongos

and...the obligatory set of Remo Roto-Toms

The cymbals...

20" Zildjian Amir ride

16" Vintage 50's/60's Zildjian crash (small edge crack unfortunately)

The dusted-off assessment...

The Lido Supreme kit:

+very cool wrap!

-wrap is cracked and peeling badly on the "virgin" bass drum

+only minor wrap blemishes here and there on the rest of the kit

-someone used clear packing tape over the cracked wrap on the "virgin" bass

-missing reso hoops on all three toms

-missing claws and T-rods from reso side of both bass drums

-missing one leg on "virgin" bass drum

-original tom mount is missing

+tom mount replaced with a nice B/O era Ludwig

+all 4 original steel bass hoops included

-one bass hoop is missing wrap inlay completely

+all badges are there and in nice shape

+lugs are cool Sonor teardrop style, and off-set drilled on rack toms

-some minor pitting on lugs and hardware

+tone controls present and functional on toms

1965-ish Ludwig Supra:

-serious chrome flaking on shell

+lugs, hoops, strainer, wires, all in very nice shape

Questions for the VDF gurus...

What is the wrap pattern called?

How much does the second bass drum add to the value of the kit? In other words...Should I attempt to salvage the wrap on the "virgin" bass drum somehow by removing the packing tape and gluing it down or whatever, or just use it as an organ donor for the claws and rods needed on the other bass drum?

In my limited research I have seen the Lido Supreme brand attributed to both Pearl and Star/Tama bloodlines??? I personally think it's Star. I have an acrylic kit with exact identical lugs and off-set drilling of the toms. That kit had no badges when I got it, but the tom mount had Star logo, and it was declared to be Star by Ralf (he was confident enough that it was Star to allow me to put his excellent reproduction Star badges on the kit).

The flaking of the chrome on the Supra is a bummer, but a common bummer for the COA's from what I gather. Should I just clean it up and put it back together, or change the finish to brushed Aluminum or paint? I'm assuming a re-chrome would not be cost effective.

Flaky Supra drive me crazy. I just decided to enjoy Acros instead.

My vote would be do sell that Supra. Since it is Keystone, you will recoup most of your investment here.

As a matter of fact, you scored so much, you will easily be able to recoup all $300 after a sell-off - even turn a profit and keep the kit and additional stuff.

The name of the color of the wrap is Fantasia (IIRC) and while not the rarest, it IS on the rare side and a bit coveted in vintage (in general). Certainly something to keep forever (if you are a fan of the 22s).

Once you get any bearing edge issues address, and install new heads, they are likely to sound fantastic.

I would use the virgin BD as a donor, as there really is no way to repair damaged wrap like that (especially this color - a modern match is impossible.) I would even harvest some of the wrap off it if need be (BD hoop inlay for example). Seek out the correct tom mounting. Cool that one particular BD is virgin, but the fact that it has wrap damage - pretty much makes it irrelevant.

Yes, that is a Star made kit.

Not sure your depth into vintage drums, so I will state here: Please do not use steel wool on any chrome. In fact, if ever tempted to clean the chrome without full disassembly - don't do it. You don't want to scratch that wrap at all. Alot of info on here (and DFO) re: restoration. Take your time and do it right. That kit is very difficult to replace, especially difficult on the conscience if you damage it without a possible fix.

Congrats - will surely be one to shoot for Ralf's website when you are done!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hi Al!

Great score...and well worth the drive! Yep, that MIJ kit is wrapped in Pearl Fantasia, aka Fantasia Pearl! I've got a Star 6-lugger wrapped in this finish.

Heed Dj333's advice with cleaning! Have fun with all the drum items you scored!

I'd leave the Ludwig tom mount on there. It's much better quality than any 60's Japanese

one you'd find. I would also carefully remove the wrap off the virgin bass drum and keep it aside for the future. Then, sell the bare shell and hardware.

As always, excellent advice everyone!

I luckily found the VDF and did some reading before I attempted my first tear-down restoration on that acrylic Star kit, so I've been doing it "right" from the jump. Had I not been extra cautious because the kit was acrylic, I could very well have done more harm than good.

I'll post some pics in a few weeks of the cleaned up kit...another piece of advice that can't be emphasized enough is to work at a slow pace and stretch your hands and wrists often. Carpel Tunnel is no joke!

Wow interesting, your kit definitely has the same wrap, but the lugs look to be a little different. Yours don’t look as pointed as mine. More like Slingerland. Are the lugs drilled offset on your toms? In any case, it’s super cool!

Yes, just different style lugs! As you can see, they are the Slingerland copy lugs.

Yes as idrum4fun already mentioned the lugs on my kit are Slingerland copies while those on your kit are Sonor clones

so far the only Star kits I have run across with the Slingerland copy lugs and being also offset from one another are the Majestic Deluxe badged kits. I have seen the Sonor copy lugs both with and without being offset on various Star made kits
