The video above mentions oxyclean. Does anyone have experience with that?

A few members have had success with the retrobright method. If you search the forum you can see a few examples such as this: http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=43828&page=3&highlight=retrobright

My understanding is the retrobright reverses the chemical reaction that caused the yellowing in the first place so I would not expect it to damage the wrap.

I have taken serious yellowing off with a brew of windex, bar keepers friend and dawn dish washing soap. Hot water and in your case just a Mr. Clean scrubbing pad (think they = 2000 grit). Hand micro-fibre towel polish with Novus #2 then #1 all should be good.

Nothing special here but I like them.

It's called Retr0bright (that's a zero for the "o")

I used it on my '65 clubdate combo set. It can be tricky because the wrap has to stay wet AND be in the sun or under UV lights. My particular drums were in very poor shape so I thought I'd give it a try.

Incidentally it worked wonders on my old Starwars action figures too, but on those I could put in a jar of peroxide and oxyclean and leave in the sun. On the drums I had to keep Brushing on more retr0bright and turning the drums while in the sunlight, I got pretty sun burned too.

Here is the thread.

Hey everyone,

Randy of Randy73 has sent me a yellowed drum from my request for a Crappy Drum to experiment on. So MarkD, yes I will give this a try. I will try a variety of methods (Oxy, Hair Salon, Harsh chemicals, etc) on each panel of the drum and will post the results for everyone to see. Give me a bit of time as it will be a while to get this all done, that and my wife and kids keep piling on to the Daddy to do list of items. . . . .

No Guru - I just love collecting & learning about vintage drums!

Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata
70's Ludwig BOP "Ringo" Kit

A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle

Personally, I love the yellowing, like patina on cymbals. Takes years to earn that finish.
