Appears to be an unmolested "Shelly Manne model" snare drum. All the better if your friend has provenance that it belonged to the 'Manne' himself.

Shelly was one of Leedy's biggest name endorsers during the Slingerland years. He played a mahogany finished kit so this drum would certainly fit in with that detail.

First time that Ive seen the correct way to run the snares. I did not know that the snares went over the bearing edge. That might make quite a difference in the sound...though I liked mine with regular snares. I still kick myself for letting my Leedy Shelly Manne set go.

My 1963 Shelly Manne Leedy set is my forever drum set. If I ever sell off all of my drums except for one set, this is the one that I will keep forever. The drums measure 14x20, 16x16, 9x13, and 5x14 snare. When i acquired the drums many years ago, almost all of the heads had the Henry Adler Store stamp on them.

Just heard back from the guy....He said the seller cannot prove it was Shelly's drum -no provenance.....Apparently, a friend offered the seller $300 for the drum and the offer was accepted. That's that.
