Leedy c.1900-1920,6X14"

Loading...

Leedy 6X14" snare, Top of the line 14 single tension rods. "Ideal Combination Snare Strainer & Muffler". The main selling points of this snare was that the snare wires always maintained their tension, & simply moved up & down against the head. The strainer system was also attached to the hoops, which was touted as aiding the changing of heads.

Wow! Really shows how the Ludwig-super drum strainer was not thought of out of thin air. Thanks for sharing!

AND....it's a TRULY Free-floating shell because of that throw off system and the t-rods. Absolutely nothing touching the shell except the heads!!

Leedy did, indeed, develop the "Floating Head " design, & it was a major point in their advertisement until the 40's.

Yes, but I think that reference is in regards to the shell being slightly smaller in diameter so that the head doesn't bind between the rim and the shell.....isn't it?

Yes^^^

I think the "true" Free-floating drum design is still legit, today -even though it remains impossible to be able to have independent head tension. When it was the days of calfskin only, it was kind of a crapshoot as to whether or not you'd ever get both heads is sympathetic vibration to each other. But I think that synthetic heads would better facilitate the system today since they are very consistent. I think it would just be a matter of finding a WEIGHT combination that would work the best, e.g., Diplomat bottom and Ambassador top...etc.
