I have a friend who wants to lease a kit from me for a school production. I'm curious as to any ideas of what to charge, paperwork, etc.
Looking for any input on this matter, he will need it for approx. 1-1/2 months.

One of the first things I would do is require that the productions insurance cover the cost of all damage, minor to completely destroyed and made to be unusable. Also, they must cover the cost of heads, cymbals, etc. And then charge a 200 cleaning fee/deposit (returnable, of course) and 200/week, minimum 1 week rental. As far as contract, a lawyer would need to write that.

That all sounds reasonable to me. But, since you are talking about doing this in Southern California, just double what he said to be in line with everything else in your playground.:p
You don't need to have a lawyer write a contract. Just make sure it covers what you want it to. As a bottom line, have some clause in there that insures that if anything were to "total" the kit, that they would be responsible for $____ for replacing it, and that YOU are the one who decides whether it's condition warrants the complete replacement fee.
Also, don't rent out your super-nice or super-valuable gear. But, that should be glaringly obvious...
just like if you were renting to a movie studio by the way there is a market for that
BBk, Just a few questions is the set complete with cymbals? Is it a high school?..This is how and what i charge for drums.I only lease to studio's-{ i don't think i would lease a set of vintage drums to a high school}- anyway i charge 200.00 an hour for a set of drums/stands..Snare drums are 50.00 an hour-{if they need more than the one with the set}-Cymbal set up={ h-h,rides,crashes} is 100.00 an hour..I do put a deposit on the cymbals for what the replacement cost would be.As far as a deposit on the drums to cover heads, stands i don't charge i cover that myself..If you are thinking about leasing the drums to the school i would put a deposit on every thing maybe 400.00 to cover the drums, but i would also write up if any damage to the shells they would have to replace them.Same goes on the cymbals replacement cost on them.I would charge the school a total of 700.00 for the 6 weeks..Mikey
Mike,
It's going to be a production (theater) in a college and the drums I'm going to let them use are some 60's Pearls. I'll get more details, but it's probably going to be a 4-piece with hats, crash, ride and all hardware...$700.00 might be a bit steep, but I'll hit them with that price and go from there.
Any more input is appreciated.

BBK. I was thinking it was a high school thing.A college thing is better to lease to than a H.S. thing..I would not go less than 75.00 a week that would be more like 450.00 for the 6 weeks..Just make sure you have them sign the paper work that they will replace any cymbals or drums do to damage...Mikey
