In the beginning Latin percussion made there timbales to look like the original Cuban timbales. The difference between the Cuban and LP was one had 5 lugs and LP has 6 lugs. Also the rims were made so that you could put calf skins on them. Later with the plastic revolutionising the market they changed rims to what is made today, this does not give you an option to mount calf heads the traditional way. But you can mount calf heads on a wooden Hoop and use calf heads in this manner. Here you have some photos of the first edition that were made and change done later to accommodate calf the traditional way.
