Latest Star (Royal Star) drum shells: also early Tama drums?

Hello,

I own two Royal Star drumsets with the same configuration 12"/13"/16" + 22". (Some of you may already have seen them on my Star-website, lug type 6370.) Apparently - due to the lug type and the style of the double tom holder - these are some of the very latest Star drums, before they switched to Tama.

Here's the configuration of the shells:

pure shell thickness itself: 8.5 mm, 7-ply (lacquered inside, maple?),

plus rerings: also 8.5 mm thick, 25 mm high, 7-ply as well.

The bearing edges have approx. 30/35° to the inside and are rounded to the outside.

The shells are really, really very massive.

Has anyone knowledge that one of the very early Tama series included the same shells, too? Perhaps the drums with the early Tama 'Percussion Instrument' badges on?

I doubt they are maple, Hoshino didn't start using maple in Tama kits till the Artstar 2 around 1984

Hi!

Old post I know... however, I just found a really early Tama for sale here in Sweden. It has the T-badges, square ones, with the text "Perfect Percussion"

I haven't been able to pick up the set yet, as the seller lives a 4 hour drive from here, but the shells look like the same as your late Star Royalstars Ralf!

Check the pictures. The color is called Silverstar I believe...

Oh...just recalled this. I have a friend who has an Imperialstar set with the same shells. Check it out!

I have a Star Imperial marching snare with the same type shell, thick shells with re-rings and no paint on the inside of the shell.

My Perfect Percussion Tama's don't have the re-rings and are painted grey inside (probably from the Royal series). This one is probably from the old Imperial series from Star.

Hello,

If I am not wrong, the 'Perfect Percussion' badges are the absolute first ones under their new successor brand TAMA. Additionally, the Fre'o'matic double tom holder on the bass drum and the 'KingBeat' snare drum (with parallel action) are the very same as on the latest Royal Stars. Lugs may differ.

Yours is a nice score!

WOW! That looks like a gorgeous interior!

Wonder what specie that is. I bet there are some people that would be able to tell if they had it in their hands: closer view and smell.

Doesn't it make you want to try to install big ol' thick rerings in some shells?

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Have been told by a carpenter (whom I've presented a shell) that it's birch, 7-ply plus thickness of re-rings extra (also 7-ply).
