Latest ~ reworked Tama/Pearl Jazzette kit

So I had these lyin' around the garage. The bass is a Pearl Export Pro 12x18 which used to be a 16x18 FT.

The rack is a Tama Swingstar 8x12.

Both shells appear to be luan with a layer of birch thrown in there.

The FT is a Keller 6-ply birch shell, 11x14.

I recut the batter edges on the Japanese shells to sharp 45 degrees, then sanded the interiors to 180 gr. and gave 'em 2 coats of tung oil to make the interior surfaces more reflective. Gave the Keller FT shell the same edge cut and treatment.

The wrap is a custom ColorWrap from drummaker.com. I was trying to get something close to the old Pearl Tiger's Eye wrap...eh, it didn't quite get there...the old stuff has a lotta different shades in it, while this new stuff doesn't. Nevertheless....it still looks pretty unique, even if it's more of a "copper swirl".

Drums sound very good...it is amazing what a recut and some tung oil can do to "economy" type shells. The kit really punches and sounds very lively.

Just look at those poor, helpless drums, all alone in that cold, dark garage....they need some lovin'!

My wife saw this post, and freaked when she found out there more orphans on the way to the oil patch. Oh well, what's a fellow to do? Build more drum sets? Move a cot into the garage? It is finally cooling of....oops, there it went, now it's too cool in there to sleep...

Nice kit, nice wrap, nice work out.

I love those wood hoops in contrast to the chrome parts.

Do you use a raiser for this BD or is a 18" diameter still

sufficient for placing it on the ground?

It's funny, y'know...I used to HATE maple or natural wood finished bass hoops. I really dig the good ol' semi-gloss painted style. I still think that's a classic look.

But for some wrap colors...such as this, or champagne sparkle ...earthtone colors, I guess.....wood looks very good.

I even started using a dark, dark ebony stain on the hoops which I would normally have painted black...just so a touch of the grain comes thru if you look at it. 2 light coats of ebony stain, first coat brushed on, second coat applied with a cloth, followed later by a few coats of Tung oil.

The result is a kinda charcoal-y hue with some woodgrain. Looks slightly distressed, very nice on vintage rehabbed kits.....

Nope an 18" doesn't need a riser. All pedals don't work great with 'em, and all beaters don't either. But I just use a beater with a rod a tad shorter than usual.

I see folks often allow the beater to hit off-center on 18's and 16's...and man, IMHO...that is a BIG mistake...it just creates very weird and troublesome overtones and ringing....then folks complain that they aren't happy with small bass drums !!!!DOH

So, nope...just a regular pedal with a beater rod that fits well to hit on-center. (Hehehe...oftentimes I will actually glue on a strike-patch (i.e. falam type patch) directly centered on the brand new batter head I include, so it forces the buyer to adjust the pedal/beater accordingly....)

Quick, maybe dumb question. How did you cut that 18" down? I've been curious to try something like this myself, but I don't know for sure how to go about it.
