Late 60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle Set

Loading...

Hi,

I have been drumming for more than 30 years but have never developed that 'zen' like passion for knowing all things drum. My passion has been getting the most out of what I have. So now I have a beautiful old Ludwig set that I just won't be playing any more that I need to sell. But, I don't want to give it away!

I need to get some realistic idea whether this set is something special or just another old set. From studying eBay for a while I'm not quite sure. Since I bought the set used I don't know exactly what I have.

What I have been able to figure out so far:

The shell color is called Champagne Sparkle. The tag numbers date to somewhere about 1967. The set was in cases when I bought it in 1975 and carried it that way ever since so the shells are in almost perfect condition. It is a 20" double bass with 12" and 13" on rack and 14" and 16" on the floor. Most of the easily changed hardware (pedals, hi-hat, bass spurs) had been changed to Rogers. Cymbals (15 Hi-Hat, 17 Crash, 21 ride) are Zildjians purchased new in 1975.

The snare drum is more confusing. From the reading I have done it appears to be an alloy shell because there are a few tiny spots where the chrome is lifting. But, I need some help if it is a Supersensitive or Supraphonic. Is the difference in how the snares release? This one has a rod that goes through the drum and releases the snares on both sides at the same time.

I'm looking for some sense of scale here. Is this just an old, under $1000 set that a starter would be happy to get, or, because it was so well cared for is it something more valuable? I would appreciate any advice I can get.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I did some studying on the forum here to see how others have posted pictures and found more than I was looking for! It seems that trying to get ballpark values can be a touchy subject.

I hope I'm not being unrealistic, but, low res pictures will not do my set justice. I tried researching this in other posts but most have the low res pics. Is there a recommended free site where I could drop them and then post a link?

In my reading I did see someone mention a wish to hear a set being used in an audio file. Is it possible to post audio files on here? My set (with me playing D' Drummer) did actually make it to vinyl in 1981. I could send a file if anyone is interested. The vocals wound up kind of goofy because our lead singer tripped out on LSD in the middle of the studio work and the bass player had to do his best to finish the project.

I appreciate your help.

OK. Let's see how this works.

Not too hard. I attached them, not inserted them.

Let me know it you would like a closeup of something.

Thanks,

Dave

I would say your set should be in the 1,000.00--1,200.00 price..I see by your photos that to me its a piece together set the 12,13,14 toms are white inside this dates these drums from 1964-67..the bass drums are 16 tom are clear that dates them 1967-69 or so..and with the rogers spurs on the drum drums that to me takes alittle off the price..If the set was a matching set[inside shells] with all ludwig parts[spurs] i would say this set could sell from 1,500.00 to 2,000.00 or so...Mikey

Thanks to you all for your time.

My question is answered in that this is not some 'super collector' set that I would kick myself later for selling too cheap.

I think I am going to put it up locally to see what I can get. It's always nice to be able to pick up the pieces and look at them in person.

Thanks again.

You know. I will probably look in on the forum from time to time now that I know it is here. Watching some of the video clips almost has given me the 'itch' back. ...not good when you are selling your only drums! :(
