late 60s Coronet

KK

This is one I've had around for a while, wondering what to do with it.

So here it is...

Levon Helm inspired late 60's Coronet snare.

Original edges and nice Gretsch copy lugs

P.S. badge is a reproduction

Thx idrum.

I'm really surprised at how much I like this look.

Drum sounds great now that it actually has snare beds.

I tagged it Coronet but it may be a Stewart. The old timers here say there were 3 kinds of drums that were common in my area in the 60's/early 70's.

Coronet, Stewart and Crown and I'm pretty sure this isn't a Crown.

I had Dixie snare in high school. I had a big concert with my band and it sounded awesome (I have it on VHS and digital vid). {{{ 1988 }}} Then in the late 90s I took it to a drum builder and had the edges re-cut. That made it sound even better!

You may like the way this snare sounds (and certainly better with proper beds) but you may want to re-cut the top with some 45s. It may make it sound even better.

Is that a laminate on the rims? That is very unique!

BTW - my Dixie is also Luan - made by Pearl 72-74.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

it's a strip of white birch veneer stained with a water based stain and shellacked. It was attached to the rim with outdoor, double sided tape.

This does mute the rim component of the drums sound some what, and IF it had brass rims, I wouldn't have done it, but it actually sounds better with the veneered rims.

Kinda gently kills the overtones that steel hoops always seem to have.

Nice looking snare!

Can you tell us how you refinished that shell? I've got some random luan shells that I'm thinking of turning into a little jungle kit and don't want to put money into wrap. That finish looks really good.

Thanks.

Gary

real easy one.

minwax drk walnut stain.

let it dry for a week, then a couple coats of clear dewaxed shellac inside and out. block sand to 400 grit.

Then lay on a couple coats of clear lacquer.

you can keep laying on coats and goin up thru the grits till you get the gloss you want.

I wanted a kinda matte finish so i stopped after the first 2 coats of lacquer.
