late 40"s 7x14 Radio King project help

Loading...

Is there anyone that can restore/re-engrave the "Sligerland Radio King" on the drum hoop? In the process of having the lugs & brackets re-plated, I forgot to instruct the plating guys to ONLY POLISH the hoops. Well, if you have'nt already guessed what happened, when the old chrome was stripped for replating, the logo engraving disappeared with it!

Also, can anyone tell me what was the period correct hardware used to attach the the 3 point strainer & guide plates? The stuff I removed is #4 slotted pan head machine screws. I need to know if the screws & nuts & washers are susposed to be plated nickel or chrome, stainless or what? I want to replace or replate the hardware with period correct components.

Here are some pics of the disassembly & hardware that came from the drum. The lock washers are #6 which are a little too big for the screws.

Big thanks to any one who can lend this newbie a hand!

I have found that a lot of the mounting screws were nickle plated instead of chrome. The lock washers are sometimes black oxide or nickle.

Is there anybody here I can buy these nickel and chrome screws/nuts from? I'd like to replace mine since some knuckle head "jacked" most all of the screw slots on these.

What screws are you looking for? Lug strainer...Also a heads up- when you do put the drum back together when doing the lugs DON"T put the screws very tight with these R/K lugs they are made of "pot Metal" and you could brake off the tip of the lug were the screw goes into....Mikey

I'm wanting to replace the screws, nuts & lock washers that attatch the 3 point throw-off & the strainer brackets, (15 total). Thanks, Mikey, for the tip on the lug tightening.

Drum Upate: Well, here's the finnished drum. These are the original, re-chomed hoops. I'm currently still looking for a suitable replacement upper with the the "Radio King" stamping. After talking to John Aldridge (super-nice dude), I was informed that it would be very difficult if not impossible to duplicate the logo after the rim got polished by the chrome shop. The heat put into the rim from the polishing process hardens the metal making it difficult to engrave. Also I found out during some research (and confirmed by John) that the logo is actually stamped-in the hoop, not engraved. All of the original lugs, strainer bracket parts, tension rods, hardware & throw-off parts are re-plated in nickel. The lug mounting screws cleaned-up really nice after a short dip in my shop's carberator parts cleaner. The wrap was sanded & polished. It's faded some, but the original wrap. The shell is within 1/8" in round and the original bearing edges are in very good condition. Finally, a couple of minor re-enforcing ring re-glues before assembly. I went with an Aquarian American Vintage snare side head & and a Remo Renaissance Powerstroke 3 batter side. Needless to say, I was not disappointed when I engaged the Puresound vintage replacement snare. This drum sounds f'n awesome!
