La Boz....by Star...?!?!

Loading...

Well, I used to think La Boz was solely built by Pearl. However, this is irrefutably a Star, or at least the bulk of parts are. These are Star "Type A" lugs, or as we all know them, Soundkind lugs. This strainer, as we always thought, was always thought to be a Pearl. So now the questions will have to come about:

1) Is this drum original?

2) If it is, why is it mixed parts? This strainer was never seen in any Star-based catalogs.

3) The shell looks like a Star 3 ply to me. The hoops are almost certainly Star stick savers, not Pearl. So, is the strainer an add-on, or has this been totally rebuilt with all different parts? The wrap is one rare bird, so what do all you say?

Yeah, this one is a head-scratcher. As I see it, there are several things going on here:

1. Both Pearl and Star used Stick Saver type rims in the early days. However, this one has a protruding snare gate that isn't seen on all (or most) Stick Saver copy rims. My hunch is that these are a Pearl variety, but I really cant be sure.

2. The wrap looks like a Pearl wrap to me. Pearl did the Tiger's Eye and the Blue and Purple Strata, and this looks like one of those. Star did the Satin Flame and Onyx wraps, but I cant remember seeing a strata wrap on a Star drum.

3. The round snare strainer I've always thought was a Pearl giveaway, so I'm at a loss here, too.

4. The lugs seem to be the Star version of the Soundking copies. Maybe the original lugs on this drum we in bad shape and the owner swapped them out to make it look better?

Last thing, the interior of this drum does look like a Star, but then again, both Star and Pearl had luan shells with re-rings. So let me ask the question, if you came upon a bare MIJ shell, stripped of wrap and hardware, would anyone be able to tell if it was a Pearl or a Star?

Pearl's soundking copy is a bit rounder than the Star. I swear, if you take all three and put them in the a line, the Star and Slingerland will be virtually indistinguishable while the Pearl lug is noticably different. I know this is not a Star, just the lugs have simply been changed out at some point. It's just that shell, it looks like all my Star 3 ply shells. The Pearl shell looks a bit different in the re-rings.

And to answer B~the snare gate being a bit droopy is just like my WMP Apollo, which is, to be certain, a Star model, not the later Pearl. The lugs are the Type "B" teardrops, and the original strainer was trashed so in the bin with it...

How are the re-rings different on the Star and Pearl drums? Are they a different size? They both seem to be the lighter colored wood, a cheap maple?

Is there a possibility that the rims on your Apollo snare are not original? I have found that, especially if bought at a music store, so many of these drums have been tampered with, so the rims are often not original. I ask because I think I've seen Star badged drums with the regular Stick Saver copies (without the extended snare gate) maybe in the catalog pics. I have a Stewart snare, that I am pretty sure is a Pearl, that has the extended gate Stick Saver copies. I'll start another thread to discuss that drum as soon as I take some pics.

Oh, and the the type 'B' teardrops, those are the snare teardrops, right? (With inserts on top and bottom?)

The teardrops, yes, the snare one, skinny.

As for the re-rings on Star, they seem to be cut an fit differently to me than the Pearl rings.

As for the hoops on my snare, it still had the original heads and came from GoodWill, it is the one that was broken all the way through, so I'm thinking they are probably original. This is the one that has the Pearl strainer on it.
