Kits missing the same parts?

In the past 4 days I've seen 2 older kits on CL. One is a '60's red sparkle Slingerland, 1 up/1 down and a chrome snare. Kick drum has a rail consolette and cymbal mount for $160. The other is a blue sparkle Rogers 1 up/2 down and a chrome snare also '60's I believe. Guy wants $500.

My question is why so many toms from this era are missing bottom rims/heads and t rods and kick drums missing reso hoops/heads and t rods? Was this a common "mod"?

Thanks for any thoughts.

It was very common in the 70's fro drummers to remove the bottom and front heads and then duct tape the living **** out of their drums to make them sound dead. It was the sound of the times and the style. It all fell out of favor in the 1980's in a big way. If you've ever tried to sell a kit with concert toms you have seen first hand how hard it is to try and sell a kit with no bottom heads.

+1 with what CT Pro Percussion said! I remember, very well, of the "cardboard" sound of the 70's. It was all the rage! Heck, I even took off the bottom heads on my MIJ Lyra gold sparkle kit to get "that sound"! LoLoLoLo

I've seen a fair number of Concert Tom kits for sale on eBay. While they look cool, there just isn't the demand for them. The sellers need a reality check with their asking prices! For a case in point, check out this kit! http://www.ebay.com/itm/121056960106?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Took the reso's off my Stewart kit back in the mid 70's, too. It WAS the thing to do, then. Horrible sound, to me. So dead.

We'll let it slide for Mr. Bevan, because ELO is so awesome. Tom Scholz might be interested though.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I lurked here for a few months prior to buying a kit November a year ago and started noticing it even then. I figured there had to be something to it because it seemed too odd for that many hoops/heads to be missing from the same drums. You know I'm thinking "you guys never heard of Loctite?"

I'm guilty as well, but I just cut most of my bottom heads away so I could keep the rims mounted.

I have to admit, a friend of mine had a luddy 5 piece concert Tom kit, big drums, properly tuned up a bit high, with silver dot on white heads. It sounded really nice.
