Kick head choice and tuning

Loading...

Hi,

Just had my 1971 Slingerland's refurbished. The 12' & 16" tom's have the Remo coated ambassadors on top and clear ambassadors on bottom. Tuned about mid tension with the reso head a bit tighter and they sound sweet. Classic 60's to my ears. The bass is still a WIP for me. I did have an Evans EMAD (single ply) with NO foam ring installed, just the Evans EQ pad inside the kick. The reso is an Aquarian regulator head with a 4" hole. It had a nice punch, more of a modern thud. I just installed a Remo smooth white ambassador but have yet to get what I'm looking for. Would you tune this head to JAW? or tighten it up for more of a bounce. How do you tune your vintage kicks?

Thanks

OK, I'll answer my own thread :-) Did not like the smooth white ambassador on this drum. I put the EMAD (single ply) back on with the small dampening ring and the drum sounds much better.

Anyone want to buy a 22" smooth white ambassador ?LoLoLoLo
