Kick Felt Strips - Motown sound?

Loading...

Hello,

I love this sound on a kick! Single ply heads on both sides and NO hole in the front head. What I have found useful in to take one regular felt strip, about 2 inches wide, and cut it length wise. I then use the one inch wide pieces under the heads. one per head. That way you get a bit more tone.

Also, using a ribbon mic on the kick. If you do this be sure to have the ribbon at a downward angle so you down blow it out.

I can send you a sample of this sound if you would like.

I have it on pretty good authority that the Motown drum set had a Sunday Detroit Times newpaper stuffed into the bass drum.

Very useful and informative post. But I've got a session tomorrow. How quickly can someone send me a Detroit Times? I've got a Vancouver Sun in my kick but I'm positive the Detroit Times would sound way better.

When im going for that sexy sound i drop a few Playboys in my kick. But you gotta use the old ones, the new ones give you a more slutty sound, much like the women of today... don't even think about using Hustler. and if your going for ***, there is always Parade.

A Websters encyclopedia however, will no doubt give a broad range with many subtle nuances.

Though Im a huge fan of felt strips, one on each head, no holes, just tone.

Cobbled together? You mean all this great music was recorded with a lowly players kit? Cool1
