Kawai Drums/ Negi Drums collaboration or merger

Loading...

Hey there brother MIJ enthusiasts-

I have been told (translated from a Japanese website) that in the 70s Kawai Corp. purchased Teisco and gradually phased out the production of drums.

Last week I purchased a shipment of old MIJ marching equipment for my drum school. The drums were all listed as "Kawai Marching"- 4 13" snares, 2 13" field drums, A 24" marching bass drum, and some great tri-toms. To my happy suprise the stuff was not only in great condition but all the drums had nice big Negi Drum Co. badges inside the shells. The Negi snares and kits I have seen have all been really well made. It shows one more piece to our manufacturing puzzle- A Kawai/Teisco/Negi relationship

Here are some shots

Cool. We don't see that stuff here. Maybe it was made for English speaking Europe?

I am going to ask for your assistance, and open mind. As you are there and I am here, it would be much easier to ask about. And I really need this information as I will be setting it down for a historical account. We are going to test and dig deep into my theory of the Hoshinl Gakki group, which is/was the name of the parent company for Star/TAMa and what involvement, or rather name, was used for the stencil market kits immediatley following the switch from Star to TAMA.

From the lug design and other design cues, I am almost certain that TAMA/Hoshino went to using the original family name

(Hoshino) to produce the last strains of stencils only to shore up the books while TAMA was making a name for itself, never to look back. And I am certain it will be difficult to prove this theory as no one in the family would want us to know they used the name because the stuff I contend is in fact from this group is cheap, inferior, even to the point of very bad. Like some of the BlackJack and other really bad "name brands" we tend to associate with the elusive "Hoshino". This Hoshino, using the shark-tooth lugs...look closely at how they mimic the early TAMA lugs....This all while STMS and Brooklyn Music supply were gearing up to move their contracts to Pearl as they were gearing up to move produstion to Taiwan. I am almost positive this is the missing link and the Hoshino name brand we are looking at in the super cheap, early/mid 70s crap stencils, not the other Hoshino. This would have been the case for a very short period of time as there are not that big a store of these inferior drums. I am talking on the order of maybe 2 years, 3 at the very most.

I realize this will be hard to prove, but I am almost positive this is the case. I would almost stake my reputation that this Hoshino, not the one you contend, is the one that is the missing link to the whole mystery of the look-a-like but not quite good enough crap we find from time to time here in the States.

"Ignorance may be overcome through education. Stupidity, however, is a lifelong endeavor." So, educate me, I don't likes bein' ignant...
"I enjoy restoring 60s Japanese "stencil" drums...I can actually afford them..."I rescue the worst of the old valueless drums for disadvantaged Children and gladly accept donations of parts, pieces and orphans, No cockroaches, please...

Nice and in absolutely astonishing great condition.

If I'm not wrong, neither 'KAWAI' nore 'Negi' nore 'Teisco' drums never turned up in continental Europe at that time. I assume that they were distributed in Japan only?
