A couple years back I bought a new (modern) Ludwig P-1216 cymbal L-arm shell mount because I wanted to start mounting my ride cymbal on my WMP bass drum and since the modern mounts have the safety/memory lock feature I thought it would add some stability and peace-of-mind (which it did!). The new mount also came with a rubber backing gasket which goes between the mount and the shell. Again, I this was a useful added feature to help keep the mount from digging into the drum wrap. However, a few days ago I had the drum out in the sun for just a bit when I noticed a black “shadow” on the WMP going completely around the perimeter of the mount. I took the mount of and checked underneath it and sure enough…the WMP wrap had absorbed the black dye (or whatever it is) from the rubber. Looks like crap. Take a look at the pictures…anyone know how to fix this?

I would try Novus or Meguiars Scratch X. I had great results with both of these on WMP. I like having gaskets under the lugs and hardware on my drums too (new drum sets spoiled me), but I don't use rubber, I use either a flexible black plastic or black gasket paper (they use it to make gaskets for automobile engines).

Man that finish looks great. It looks like it has seeped into the finish. It may be that sanding is your only option. Start with Novus 3 first though.

Whew! The Novus 1-2 treatment worked...I seriously thought I was screwed. I hadn't even thought about using N1 and N2 to try to remove the black. I actually forgot I had on the shelf in the garage. Worked like a charm! Thank you all very much! No way will I reinstall the gasket; I'll leave it as the original was--gasket-less.
And here is what they look like when they're all together. Aged to a nice cream-ish color. That black dot on the 13" tom is a fly...go figure.
Good to hear that the wrap wasn`t permanently stained...The Novus system works wonders!!
BTW, nice kit!!
Cheers

Thsoe are a slice of heaven there. Actually, white marine pearls would be the only drum kit appropriate to take with you to the afterlife. Would look good up there ...
Whew! I'm glad to hear you were able to get that stain off! I wanted to share something I learned last year with a rust-stained WMP drum that may help you some time in the future: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=27423. The Magic Eraser also removed a few black scuffs (I guess some type of material transfer as the drum came in contact with whatever caused the marks) in various areas on that drum set.
You have a beautiful kit, by the way!
