Just bought a drumset - can you identify it? Last viewed: 4 days ago

Hey guys,

I found this drumset on the Austrian equivalent to craigslist and since I recently got into restoring drums, I thought I'd buy it and work on polishing it up a little. Also, it only cost 75 bucks, so there's that.

I don't know much about identifying them though, and the photos are a bit blurry. But can you make out the model or the maker of the drums? The cymbals, the seller says, are Zydian, so I guess that's Zildjian.

From the round badge, I guessed that it could be a Gretsch kit, but I didn't find any models with the mounts that are used on the pictured drums.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance!

Regards, Buze

From the features I can barely see in the pictures, my guess is that it's a MIJ (Made In Japan) kit. The lugs look similar to Slingerland Sound King lugs, which were commonly copied by Japanese drums. Also, the bass drum T-rods appear to be the MIJ copies of the Slingerland Radio King era T-rods. Also, the tom mount is similar to a Slingerland. However, the badge is definitely not a Slingerland badge. My guess is it may be a STAR or Valor badge. I'm not sure what the gold sparkle drum could be...I can't see it well enough. That's about the limit of my knowledge of MIJ drums. However, it looks like a pretty nice deal for $75, especially if one or more of the cymbals are Zildjian.

I hope I've been some help to you. Good luck with the restoration!

Lynn

My guess is Wooding.

If I'm not mistaken, Wooding was made in Italy. Could make sense with Austria being close to Italy.

Yeah, the pics are rather blurry, but I'm pretty excited already and I can't wait to see it in real! As soon as I do, I will probably give you an update here.

Thanks anyways for your answer! I don't know too much about MIJ drums either, apart from an ASAMA set I restored a few years ago. But it sounded okay and seemed like a solid set.

Star or Valor seems to be a good guess here. (I compared them to these http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/japanese_drums/badges.html )

If anyone has some additional information about the background or another guess, I would love to hear them!

Edit: Wow, a wooding kit I found online looks exactly like the one on the pics! That seems very plausible! Do you know more about those drums bartw?

Edit2: So I guess I should have this post moved to the Vintage Non-USA drums section?

Wooding relates to Meazzi like Olympic relates to Premier.

I mean it was the cheaper line of Meazzi.

If I'm not mistaken. I just read it somewhere, I might have remembered it wrong. I don't have anymore info on Wooding.

Good luck!

I'm agreeing with bartw and ChristianB on this. It seems to be Wooding. The Hi Hats look like they might be Avedis Zildjian. Buy it before someone else does! You can't go wrong at that price.

Please report back to us with news. :)

Thanks for all your answers! I'm glad I didn't buy total crap here haha

Christian, let's get in touch about the gold sparkle floortom - it doesn't really fit to anything I own.

I'll write you a private message.

I'll post updates tomorrow, when I got it at home :)
